Kettles

I’m looking at getting a kettle for the cab instead of using the gas bottle/primus. However, before I fork out £30 or so on a 12/24v one, could I use an ordinary household kettle via my 300w inverter or would I need a larger inverter? Thanks in advance

you’ll need a very big inverter, the electric kettle we’ve got is rated at 2200w

My household kettle is rated at 2750 - 3000 watts. :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

If you go for the 12/24 volt version you need to check the rating of the socket you intend to use in the cab. Most accessory/cigarette sockets are rated at 10 amps or less and a kettle will draw more than that.

These kettles are, I think, responsible for more burnt out looms than anything else, just because it says 12/24 volt doesn’t mean you can plug it into any socket.  You may need to up rate the dropper for a 12 volt one or have a direct feed, protected by the appropriate fuse for a 24 volt version.

Ok, so our home kettle is an old one  but I didn’t think penfold would like the main kettle we use - he’d need to take an Aga in the cab :open_mouth: :open_mouth:

spose he could always carry a genny :unamused: :unamused:

i use one of these argos.co.uk/static/Product/p … 407497.htm less hassle thought about a kettle but after reading some where on this site decide not to. buying an inverter and worrying weather i would fry the loom

I use a 24v low-wattage number. I had to uprate the fuse to a 30amp cos it blew the 10amp one. Is that a bad idea? Have been using it for a year without any hassle. What’s a loom?

The only thing about the cig lighter kettles is they take 10mins to boil, but still saves a fortune on msa coffees and you get a better cuppa than from your dodgy snack bars.

I use the same, not much bother at all to use and boils very quick. Gas canisters are cheap as well from Argos £15.99 (i think) for 12

I bought one of those red plastic dumpy 24v kettles a while back, they are way better than the white skinny ones. It would boil a pint of water in about 3 mins. I’m sure the sparky said 18amps would do.
The firm were Truckstop Plug in Products phone number on it is 01234 838571 and the PO Box number is 639, Woburn UK. It’s a while since I bought it so the details might be wrong but they are all that is on the bottom.

I bought one of Davey Driver’s kettles 2yrs or so ago. Still using it now.

I got my sparky to wire in a 16 amp hella socket with a feed from some high amp source from the fuse box, and he put it on a 30amp fuse — this gets round the initial surge when you turn it on. Also have a 16 amp plug on the kettle.

It boils quicker when running the engine — usually switch mine on 10mins before I know I’m going to stop.

When parking up at night, I usually boil a kettle full on the run in, then pour it in a flask. Then just whack a cup full in the kettle to bring it back to the boil.

If you are serious, which i’m not sure about, you are one lucky bloke !!

Every cable has it’s limits & if the manufacturer protected a circuit with a 10A fuse, it was to protect the supplying cable. Uprating the fuse doesn’t uprate the cable, & with one uprated from 10A to 30A it might as well not be there.

The loom is the main wiring harness in the vehicle.

4 canisters for £3.50 cheap as chips and 2 mins to boil excellent but for any trucker

you where robbed
i onlt paid £7.99 for mine

Our lot stopped us using gas.So i bought a 24v kettle from exelby on the A19 southbound up in cleveland.
Just plug it in and it boils eventually. If it melts the loom its their tough luck. Those flat camping cookers were safe and ideal. But jobsworth said NO!!

I needed a new kettle…so bought one at ferrybridge services…leaked like a SIEVE WHEN I TRIED IT OUT IN FRANCE THE NEXT DAY…so…went without for a couple of days…then had to buy another one …and get a refund on the other one…the 24v lighter socket almost melted…but…our boss paid £100 to have all the trucks fitted with a 30 amp hella socket …but i dont have a plug…and theyre not easy to get hold of…so my simple answer is to buy a normal household socket…and connectand that to the 30 amp wiring…that way …13 amp plugs are easily obtainable.and interchangeable…problem solved…now find fault with that system …

I use a domestic 1.9kw cordless kettle in my cab

Boils a full kettle (approx 2lt) in about 2 mins)
