He was pulling a fast one, got found out and paid the consequence. Maybe if he wasn’t effectively stealing from his employer (it was their waste - not his to sell) then maybe they could pay a higher wage.
It seems the only reason he won the tribunal was because of the way the dismissed him, not because of the reason why.
See the way I read the article especially the last paragraph is that the boss knew about this practice and it had been tolerated for years. Then all of a sudden it wasn’t tolerated and the boss wanted the money and to lose a wage bill at the same time…

Workshop scrap has been divvied up between the fitters for donks. Many places I’ve worked at the management have told us that it’s about time the scrap was cleared and to load up the van with it and get rid of it. This looks like an excuse to cut the wage bill, save on redundancy and take advantage of the better price of scrap metal. It will probably prove to be the most unproductive management decision at this company. Now they have a thoroughly fed up workforce - not the best way forward.

Anyway, scrap was always an Xmas bonus drink for the chaps wherever I’ve worked in the past. Bloody cut backs are ruining everything!
mate of mine had the same at a major car dealership, all the grafters (mechanics etc) used to collect the scrap metal and put it towards their xmas party.
manager of the year decided to stop this and put it towards the margins etc. needless to say when he was desperate for someone to work late, help out on a weekend the offers didnt come forwards.
