It is not difficult to work out why left hand drive vehicles in the UK are involved in sideswipe incidents, all they need to do is sit in the drivers seat of a left ■■■■■■ for ten minutes and the answer will be abundantly clear - even to a copper.
Yes, but back in the heyday of continental work in the 1980s and 1990s, you didn’t constantly see British trucks which had sideswiped foreign cars on the mainland, so driving standards must come into it somewhere.

@ Malc, it’s much harder to get them sideways in the wet now what with all the ASR, TC bollox that you can’t turn off. The old Renault Premium 4 legger was immense fun in the wet .
Traction is traction Rob and it doesn’t matter what electronic controls you have, a solo unit with no weight over the drive axle and 5 ton of motor up front is going to go pearshaped in the wet
i get my fun from two wheels, not by playing silly buggers in an artic unit.

Another reason is that we were more careful because we didn’t automatically drive on the right at home, the European has to learn to drive on the left, the first time they will see “Links Fahren” will be in Dover or coming out of the tunnel. Coming up the M20 onto the M25 which we know is horrendous at the best of times, even for us, cars with British drivers will sit in a blindspot and not overtake swiftly and sensibly.

Probably because in Europe it’s rare to see car drivers running alongside trucks when there is no need. Whereas the UK is riddled with middle lane tossers who haven’t a brain in their head when it comes to safe driving.
99% of cars who get sideswiped did so because of their own pathetic driving. You very rarely see ‘proper’ cars on the hard shoulder, it’s always the 1 litre hair dresser cars which are usually driven by bad drivers who can’t read the road.
The amount of sideswipes will only increase because the motorways are full of tight arses who can’t afford the fuel. We not only have more cars to overtake in lane 1 but also have more cars in lane 2 who do 1 mph faster than trucks because they want to save fuel but have a small willy so hate to see trucks overtake them.

So if the Police stop me for not wearing a seat belt and I point out the fact that in a truck it can be just as dangerous to my own life to wear it, would I still get a fine ?

You might to watch this video and think about your answer
I hope the guy in the red truck was wearing a seat belt, he would have gone through the windscreen without.
If anyone chooses not to wear a seat belt and the consequences are injuries that are more severe than if they had been wearing one any insurance payout would be reduced, I know this to be true from an accident I had. Now I always wear a seatbelt, passengers in my car do too or I will not move!
att:
I know a little bit about this.
They used it all week last week, videoing any offences and pulling over any driver who was an actual danger.
In this case I have no problem with it - although it would depend on the definition of actual danger.
They are alarmed at the amount of foreign registered trucks sideswiping other vehicles and are therefore targetting these vehicles, whilst trying to understand exactly what is happening.
It is only being used on the M20.
They are having to deal with at least one sideswipe every day, sometimes more!
But if this is the case then there is no need for a hired unit pounding up and down the motorway. Cameras in HATO, VOSA and Police cars would suffice, provide more coverage and be cheaper . . .
I am no great fan of the Police, but when I used the 20 and 25 regularly, I was initially amazed at the amount of these incidents I saw, I soon got used to it and never even bothered to look.
. . . and if you alone saw this amount of incidents then the battenburg brigade would have the info they need in no time at all . . .
. . . or is it me just being my usual cynical old self?!
Hey Rob K , I don’t know how it computes either myself all I know is this guy would have wished he’d have at first, indicated and second, worn his seat belt !!!
i’m going to buck the trend here & say every police force that has a major motorway network going through it’s county should have unmarked trucks…
you think of the things we see every day that nearly cause accident,be it by a car/van/truck & we can’t do anything about, might be times that truck is about & catches it on camera.marked cars are no good as people slow down & drive ok till there gone, then when coast is clear, off they go.
if it catches a few truckers/van drivers on their phones then tough!! they shoudn’t be on them, what does it cost for for a blue tooth ear piece or something similar fitted in the cab!!!
