Keeping tacho charts for records

Apologies if this has been answered previously, I have searched and couldn’t find anything.

I know I have to have the current day’s chart + the previous 28 calendar days worth.

I don’t work every day and sometimes not every week so I may go away on a Monday say, with a chart in the tacho and I would be carrying all the charts I had used over the previous 28 day period, obviously this wouldn’t be 28 charts. If I got stopped, what would I need to do to explain why I had “gaps” over the 28 day period ?

If I start on a Monday and am away for a few days, I would then be carrying the current day’s chart + charts to cover more than the previous 28 days, can you get “done” for carrying too many charts.

Regards

Nig

For days when you do nothing - you do not need a chart

As said you don’t need charts for days when you don’t work so if asked just explain that you don’t work full time.
If you do any type of work other than driving in the same week (Monday - Sunday) as driving in-scope of EU regulations you should complete charts for those days to, for working days when you don’t drive you just need to put you name, date and start and finish times on the chart,

You’re allowed 42 days to hand in used tachograph charts, so as long as you don’t have any with you that are over 42 days old you should be fine.

Sorted, many thanks for the very prompt replies Rog & Tachograph, just getting used to these rules and regs, brought up on logbooks and till recently last time I used tachos was in the '80s.

You’re welcome Nig.
You’ve probably already found it but in case you haven’t here’s a link to The Drivers hours and tachograph rules booklet.

Thanks Tachograph, yes I downloaded it a while ago and printed out some of the relevant pages to carry with me, must have missed the bits about the 42 days to hand in charts and what to do about non-working days, must re-read it all  [age is my excuse  ]

LOL, no need for an excuse Nig

The 42 days maximum retention wasn’t introduced until after that booklet was released, and some of the other stuff is buried in the pages and easily missed
