Hi, im seriously thinking of re-training on class 2 after i failed my test 3 years ago. To cut a long story short i was lucky enough to be given free training as part of a redundancy package, but failed at the time & re-test. I got another job very shortly after but work & other committments prevented me from keeping my skills, I only failed with 3 minor points.
I went for a trial drive last week & although i never expected to be great i found that i had lost much of the trainning skills i had learned 3 years ago.
My question is i could spend £1100, pass & have to wait a couple of years before i would get taken on somewhere, after which i may be assessed by a potential employer on the road as not be fit to drive an 18t LGV, having lost the knowledge again?
Obviouisly other LGV drivers have been through this, so how did they do it??
If you have a current job for 5 days a week mon to fri then get the licence and perhaps do 1 day every other weekend to keep your hand in - that would be legal for the EU rgs weekly rest rules
You might only get on average 1 day a month but that would be enough to keep the skills going until you manage to get a perm job on the LGVs
Thanks for the reply ROG, I would be willing to do part time for experience, where would you suggest looking for 1 day a week work?, would it be the same places as full time like agencies etc…

Agencies - that way you are likely to meet others and get contacts for the future
At least you have done the right thing and looked carefully into the LGV newbie jobs situation before spending all that money so you have a realistic view on what is likely to happen
Many come on here and expect to get employment as a newbie and then wonder why they are getting virtually nowt to start with
Of course there are others who were in the right place at the right time and get a full time perm job within weeks of passing
Many times I saw on Youtube when HGV class 1 drivers drive with two portable GPS navigations on windshield. Is it also useful to keep semi trailer truck on lane center? Why they do that?
