Where have all the kebab and fish and chip vans gone from our laybys? Have the salmonella police caught up with them? When I started driving about 4 yrs ago I remember seeing them all over the place parked in laybys or on industrial estates from about 6pm onwards, now I’ve hardly seen any for ages! I reckon they must have done a decent trade with truckers and folk from the local villages! I remember stopping at one I can’t remember if it was moreton on marsh or shipston on stour, somewhere in that area and you got a right heap of grub for your money. So if anyone on here knows of any or sees one please put it on this post, give me somewhere new to try!

I think a lot of them have had a proverbial bullet to the head thanks to the recession. A lad I know had 3 of them a couple of years back, and according to him when you had a busy week you made a fortune, but a quiet week was a financial killer! He got rid of them when he started having more quiet weeks than busy ones …
Fish is expensive, so why would anyone want to buy crap fish that has been fried 4 hours before you get it.
I can get a large mixed kebab delivered from 8 miles away for £5.80. If you order two, they give you a 2 litre bottle of Coke
theres a chip van in the laybye on the a6 stockport bound, just after doveholes, but its only there on summer nights. i think he does allright off the bikers. there used to be a chip van come to our village on weekend nights about 20 years ago,but he did
nt have much competition then.(one chippy and a chinese).
there are around 8 take-aways now
Waitrose bracknell on 1 of the island well not on it the otherside!
Glad to see the back of a lot of them but, granted, there were and are some decent ones out there.

I only ever saw dirty ■■■■ holes, so stayed away from the lot of them. As you say there must of been good one’s.
i think alot have gone into town centers now, on an night time, guy in york a few years ago could take between 500/1000 a night easily, each van, i believe he ended up with 3 but dunno if he still does it… add the short change and the small helpings, and he used to say it was unbeleivable how any folk ordered the food paid, went for a pee and never came back… and of course the added ■■■■ flash, not a bad job really is it?
I think they have overpriced themselves out of it,plus the amount of garages that now do coffee and sandwiches and stuff, they are also expensive but people don,t seem to mind that.
Think the council have had a lot to do with them as they charge a fortune for them to pitch there
They have to be checked for H&S have a licence etc all cost money which they dont want to pay
Plus the ever present risk that faces anyone sitting in a lonely layby with a box full of cash.

For me they went down the plug-hole - once I noticed that the majority had gone halal, hand washing habits and the ‘one-tea-towel-does-all’ became a combined moral & health concern.
Now? I’d rather push wasps up my jacksy than consume compromised bits of what reasoned scepticism might consider to be fodder suited to fruit-cakes or desperate infidels: Unless I’m too pee’d up to care
The only one I know was at stallingboro but I wouldn’t eat from one.
seen one on side of a338 nr downton always seems busy but not seen him in past 2 weeks and there is one behind west quay in southampton always busy at night with the cabbies

I know of a couple of decent ones, on the A4 in Slough and off the M32/A420 in Bristol, both clean and good value, bloody busy as well if you are parked near them overnight
