I passed my class 1 test this afternoon. I had 4 minor faults (mostly related to passing other road users too tight, including a cyclist). I used Wallace and passed the test at Guildford, same place I passed class 2 last November. Same instructor, same examiner. It was my 3rd attempt at class 1.
I also got my DQC card in the post last Friday, so I needn’t be bothered by the training industry for a few years (unless I take a HIAB course, which I probably will, come to think of it). Really happy that I can just get on with my job now and my money’s my own.
Is Gordon the notorious politically incorrect examiner, famed for a ‘unique’ expectation of driving standards quite beyond what any normal examiner might expect?

If so I heard he has just recently retired…
Yeh once that pen started moving you knew he clocked you for a minor… had I’m on my class 2 back in 08, got back to the test centre after 1hr of early morning traffic, told me I had 8 minors, then proceeded to go through each of them one by one which I wasn’t afraid to challenge him with my point of view…give him his due, he was very fair the final test sheet came back with 2 …
I noticed that the test routes have changed at Guildford since I took my class 2 last November. One thing is that the narrow railway bridge at the top of Wych Hill in Woking, where there were previously temporary lights, is no longer open to anything above about 13 tonnes, so this means only the smaller rigids will be able to go that route. You’ll likely to go off to the right at the first roundabout on Wych Hill, up Trigg’s Lane (under a railway bridge) and into Woking by the A324. It also looks like Fox Corner has been dropped, as I didn’t go that way on either of my class 1 tests and the instructor didn’t take me that way at any time (the Coates instructor did, however).
They’ve also introduced a new bit of road which is an old part of the Guildford Road. It leaves the present A320 opposite the turning for Worplesdon Station. It’s narrow and windy and you’re likely to meet cars coming the other way who may not be expecting to see a truck round the bend. It brings you out on Westfield Road (the B-road down from Old Woking), at a mini roundabout.
