Jury duty as a lorry driver

Its quite a headache, more often than not you actually lose money out of it. And this thing about phoning after 6pm to find out if you’ve to go back or not is ridiculous. By 6pm you’ve either been planned out or planned in for the next days work.

I got their letter a few weeks ago and i purposely didn’t fill it out correctly trying to be a smart arse. Well merry Christmas merc0447 your citation dropped through the letterbox this morning.

Now i know Glasgow has the busiest court in Europe and i know there is probably more criminals than citizens but its a pain in the ■■■■ this will be my 6th time in 10 years and ive never actually been selected which makes it worse! Jury duty should happen once every 10years at a maximum. I get them all the time compared to other folk is it the voting register they go by? How do you get off that?

you can’t… I think it is an offence to refuse unless you have a very good reason why you can’t do it…
I did jury duty a few years ago, and found it very interesting after the initial apprehension about the proceedings…
I claimed loss of earnings, travel costs and parking, so i was no worse off and had an easy week as well.

Tell them you know the accused and recuse yourself.

I just said I was going on holiday that week. ok they said your exempt.

Wair a tracksuit and baseball cap to Dury selection your never be picked

never been asked

mind you, i don’t live in the crime capital of the country either

If you don’t want to do it this is a good course of action.

Helps if you have something like an ABH from decades ago - the system tends to disregard those with any sort of criminal record from my understanding of it

Can you tell them you are a driver and jury duty counts as work and doing said duty would infringe the WTD ,worth a try

I’ve never been called but Dad has about 3 times and he reckoned he was better off financially. I think in todays’ world of supposed free speech etc it should be voluntary (I see it as old fashioned like conscription). I’d opt out purely as with my luck I’d get something sleep inducing like fraud. I suppose you could get ■■■■■■ after day one and call in sick (Doctors’ note etc to make it legit?)

It would if he stood up and walked out of court to have a wtd break

or rolled a sleeping bag out opened a couple of tinnies and put some ■■■■ on, it’s the law you know :grimacing:

Where do you put the tacho card in the Jury dock?

I have also thought about that to .I am an o/d i could not afford to take time off i would be losing big time i would need to be paid at least £150 a day to cover costs

When I had a taxi I was called for jury service, I wrote back saying that I would be available on school holidays only .They excused me once then called again with no option but to present myself.I had to get another taxi firm to do my contract I paid him well ,the guy thought it was Christmas.I presented my receipts and was paid out of pocket expenses, plus for the other taxi.

There are proven methods of getting out of it easily enough. Google is your friend. Rog is also correct ( :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :open_mouth: ) in that it’s very rare you get called if you have a record.

As far as I am aware, you can’t get out of it. If you’re selected, you’re expected to do it. Dodging it is not as easy as you might think.

If you are a barrister or a judge you can avoid it. But most of the excuses will only defer it to a later date.

In these circumstances, I would write back, explaining that I operated a small business, and that performing any type of jury service would prove to be terminally fatal to my business and that because of the attendant damage to my psyche which would be brought about by the stress of this, that I would be unlikely to be an objective jury member since I would subconsciously be pre-disposed against the Authorities and would be more likely to vote for acquittal of the accused than possibly should be the case.

Bravo sir, that is a work of legal art.

Sounds a plan but I’m not so sure this would work. Many people run businesses but all called for jury service won’t all get away with saying the business would collapse…You also receive appropriate compensation so the argument you’d lose money doesn’t work.
