Why is it that artics NEVER seem to stop/slow down/give way at junctions and roundabouts?
Many a time I have came onto a roundabout or junction, when an artic just decides to pull out infront and I have to slam my brakes on or end up going into the trailer? Why is this?
the reason you may collide with the trailer is because the first half of the truck has already passed you.
this should give you a clue that you are not driving at a speed consistent with road conditions and that the truck driver has started his manouvre
before you appeared around the roundabout.
As a member of the IAM I would expect you to have more consideration of other road users, particularly the amount of time and distance to move a large heavy vehicle from a stationary position.
Be interesting to see how YOU deal with roundabouts should you take and pass C+E.
Try being tolerant , relaxed and helpfull, life is too short to be a whinger
malcolmj:
In both left or righthand drive trucks getting 40/44 tonne moving from a standstill because someone is too stupid or bone idle to indicate tough luck
I loved doing that and then giving them the eye contact shaking head whilst looking at their non working indicators
im another one who does it. if they cant be arsed indicating, i cant be arsed trying to figure out where they are going.
i had a few today who didnt plan ahead leaving DCs/Mways. they felt the need to get next to my cab then stick their indicator on and expected me to back off and let them through. i wore out my headlights on the truck.
one tried it on my way home. i was in the slow lane at 60 because my junction was coming up and i didnt want to chance getting stuck in L2. some clown took the other option and got stuck outt there so decided he wanted me to let him in. being the courteous and considerate driver that i am, i showed him the respect he deserved and allowed him in. BEHIND ME
"Being a member of the IAM, I would hardly consider myself a “crap driver”. "
So been an IAM member you should also know all about restraint, and also been able to be travelling slow enough to be able to stop without it causing you a problem, granted there are some bad ones in all walks of life, let them go,dont let it wind you up, but in the same vein think about those that have seen a gap when in something large and have already started to pull out only to be confronted with a vehicle that has come around and if they then stop they are then blocking possibly the first lane of said roundabout, thats when a little forethought and courtesy would come in from others comming around the roundabout,
Then u havent seen me drive. Im irish and obey every law on the roads in this country including tacho rules and speed limits etc. Your jst making comments on this cause nearly every irish truck u see is been driven by an eastern european who don give a monkeys
I have been subjected to some hair-raising antics by some of the blokes who tug the Ewals wagons in and around Purfleet . A little respect for other road users goes a long way to having a little harmony in our profession.
some roundabouts in my area i have stopped indicateing , soon as they think they know where i am going they squeese up inside or round outside.if i dont ind they can not risk it
i like the idea of the councils dept for planting all sorts of crap on roundabout and having the sponsered etc, etc. i especially like the roundabout on the north leicester ring road with fake fir trees on it.
they say that these trees etc are supposed to slow people down who are on the roundabout which is a load of bull.
we are supposed to give way to the right and if because of the trees and bushes i can only see a short distance then provided theres nothing there i have every right to pull away. i cant help it if someone comes around the ■■■■ thing at 40 mph.

Been there. Done that. Coming home from work late at night. Turning right at a roundabout full of shrubbery, and 40 mph was something that I slowed down to as I saw an artic emerging from the “Twelve o’clock exit.”
I was quite happy to ease off and pass behind the trailer as he cleared, but on this occasion, he hit the brakes, and waved me through.
Not that I would have done that. As already stated, once committed, with no other vehicles in sight, keep going.

DJ_Trucker:
I talking about the trucks that are stationery at the roundabout, and then just decide to pull out because they feel like it. Im not talking about the ones that are approaching the roundabout, as I can understand the amount of weight that’s behind the cab…so its hardly going to stop instantly!
Make your mind up. Is it the stationery (sp ) ones or the ones who don’t ‘stop/slow down or give way’?
Until you have driven a large vehicle you wouldn’t appreciate it I guess…

Remember the basic laws of physics.
Heavy weights take ALOT of stopping and for that matter starting. (Look up “momentum”)
Also remember trailers DONT trail hence artics have to take a WWWWIIIIDDDDEEE swing to get the trailer to stay on the tarmac
Oh dear. Sounds like youve got a lot to learn even before you step into your car let alone step near a truck DJ Trucker. If you cant appreciate that you are not the only one on the road and that you need to anticipate the actions of other/larger vehicles then i think a life of White Man Van is all you have in front of you.
