Journey to become a trucker at 36

Hi all,

So my journey to become a trucker has officially started, got medical done Friday and and D2 & D4 sent the same day.

I originally wanted to train with Peter Smythe but decided against as hes over 100 miles away and a residential would have been a nightmare for child care so decided to go with System training who are literally around the corner, they are dvsa approved with their own test centre and run their own testing which is handy as a retest would be within 3 days (hopefully not needed) and no extra cost.

Another bonus is I will be able to skip the hassle of looking for a break as im guaranteed a start with a supermarket at the end of the course.

I will keep this post updated as I go in case its of use to anybody as following the updates from some of you guys on here has been really good for me.

Good look on your test,on a side note you say you are guaranteed a start with a supermarket afte passing is that actually through the supermarket or via the people you are taking your test with?
If it’s the latter I’d check the small print your actually guaranteed a assessment drive nothing more,if you fail that you won’t get the job…seems a growing number of these driving school are touting about this “guaranteed job” things but fail to disclose the small print to you and you generally find out what the small print is when it’s too late.

If it’s via the supermarket itself that’s offered you the job then well done on getting a start.

And it depends which supermarket it is, not many have just C drivers

Good luck with it all.

Never done it.

Not you no Pete, but plenty others do and it’s nothing more than false advertising but it’s how these cowboy outfits take away potential pupils from genuine places like your good self.

The academy programme is sponsored by a couple of supermarkets, the cost of the training is paid upfront for me and when I pass I go onto a 9 month initial contract with one of the supermarkets and have to pay the cost of the training back by instalments each month (total cost £2200 + vat).
The fee includes all tests and training (theory, hazard, practical CPC) and retests are free if needed, the other kicker is if I dont pass and they deem more retests wont work then pay nothing at all.

Even if at the end of the 9 months I dont get a permanent position I will have gained experience and been able to spread the cost of the licences.

Im always wary about things like this so always read small print on t&c’s but cant find anything that concerns me.

Only thing im still looking into is the pay options as I can either go PAYE or go ltd which pays a higher hourly rate, think I would stick to PAYE though.

Please tell me your not paying £2640 to do your class 2? :open_mouth:

Class 1 & 2 included in the price, the job is straight onto artics

Sorry my mistake, that price seems a whole lot more reasonable all of a sudden

Lol, I would have run a mile if the cost had been for just class 2.

He has always fantasised and wished he was as good as me, one day he will get there. Maybe …

Is it Stobart’s, with a job at the end of it running out of Tesco Widnes?

No mate, job would be with Asda

Asda job looks like a good 'un. I have delivered to a few of their RDC’s, and the drivers always seem pretty happy with their lot.

About £11 per hour day’s?
