JOTTINGS

Jim,Ive been wondering about these vessels on the Pentland Garage trucks. All I can add is that they are pressure vessels as you can see the ends of the internal tie bars in the close up of the base of one of them.Westwood & Wright were involved in engineering for gas,it would be town gas in these days probably, manufacturing gas valves and gasholders of the type you used to see all over the country. Im curious about the trucks.Pentland can apply to quite a lot of the area around Edinburgh, especially to the south and east, but I`m drawn to round about Loanhead for some reason. Will need to find out more.
Mark.

On edit. Here we go.I had thought about Sonny Swinton as he had a scrapyard called Pentland something but thought it was a little tenuous.Another multi millionaire who always looked penniless.

On more edit. Click on the link and scroll down to the lorry and van section.Nice pic of Pickfords with a transformer and also the coal lorry that was pictured on this forum.

Gridley you are right it was sonny that ran them, one of my old gaffers Tam McMurdo who ran McMurdo’s of Sanquhar was a great pal of sonny.Eddie.

.

Jim,not a bad guesstimate.Raises just a few questions.
Did the Scammels run empty to the West Mids after dropping the transformer at Portobello, and did they lose the ballast boxes down there or en route before being recabbed?
They were not on the A34 when I came out of Abingdon on Saturday morning.
Sure you were not thirteen in 1961?
Mark.

Edit:Sure you were not fifteen in 1961?

Chris,I wondered about Onward, haven`t seen them for years.I also remember seeing the Ackworth motors in the yard.
And what about Bolton Roadways,I thought that was a great name, chanded to Swift something or other or was it Star something?
My counting was a bit out,it should have been eleven tons as it was five over for McBean who was running at thirty eight and our guy was running at thirty two tons.
Did you do much to Scotland when you were on the road?
Mark.

Hi Mark.I didn’t do a lot of Scottish work, when I was on general it was all steel out of Sheffield - Birmingham mostly although I did Kirkintilloch and Rosyth with some door frames once in 1968.We had a job running new containers from Cravens in Sheffield to Glasgow docks but that job was reserved for the older drivers - I tried my bloody best to get on it to no avail  . When I went onto tankers Grangemouth was a regular pick up.Drops included Ardeer,Dalry,Tradeston Street (keep yer door locked) and Polmadie Glasgow,Ingles Green Edinburgh,Prestonpans,Gestetner Stirling,Tillicoultry,Michelin Dundee,Caribonum Turriff - James Kelman country  and Glaxo Montrose. Also use to do the Littlewoods store deliveries when our Newbridge drivers were getting rat a**** at New Year, that was for Glass Glover late 70s,next door to United Glass.Scottish Tar Distillers near Falkirk was another place when on tankers and a drug company at Dumfries, was that Glaxo as well :unamused: A lot of our Scottish work was done by two drivers based at Gainford near Darlington.
My favourite run was Canvey Island to Turriff, tip and into some digs in the town,Mrs Murray I think it was,and then, after tea into the “Fife Arms” with her husband who worked for the council.I always liked the Scottish jobs, made a change from Teesside,Lancs,South Wales and around the Thames.Another was a sunday job from Sheffield to Whitehaven or Fleetwood, tip and run empty to Grangemouth to load for Knottingley, staying in Falkirk.
I’m not sure what became of Bolton Roadways but “Star” rings a bell for some reason.I think Onward etc. kept going under another name, maybe TDG,I really can’t be sure.Do they still make square sausages, cootie dumplings and Irn Bru and what was the local sunday paper called up there?

Chris.

Star Roadways perhaps?Dark green motors,gold/yellow signwriting?

Star Roadways perhaps?Dark green motors,gold/yellow signwriting?

They were dark green, little Volvos or Daf 2300s I seem to remember.Think they were the same after the name change. But I cant think of that second name,I liked Bolton Roadways,it had a ring to it.:slight_smile:They used to all park in the little industrial estate across from the Cawburn pub in Pumpherston.

Hi 5thwheel.
There was a Starr Roadways from Bilston who did a lot of low-loader work and they were green but I don’t think they had anything to do with Bolton Roadways.

After Bolton Roadways went down, it was re-born briefly as Swift Star Services. I believe it went down again.

You are quite correct Chris, your reference to low loaders brought it back, well done!!

Video capture shot (1973)

When you consider the size of this outfit it’s surprising the lack of photos posted anywhere.
You’ll have to forgive me if this question has been dealt with already. Where did Wheeler Road fit in to this operation?

Hi Jim.
Wheeler Road Transport were in the same group. They were based in Sheffield on Catley Road,Darnall and did quite a lot of Liverpool dock work, backloading sugar out of Tate and Lyles. They ran a lot of Leylands IIRC.
I always wondered why there aren’t more pictures of the Onward group.

I will be getting a couple of old Albion pics from an old acquaintence from when his dad drove with Ramage of Douglas Water and when I stick them on perhaps Mr Bell would like a look at them.
…jim

Jim,now you`ve gone and brought up another old name. Are we talking Ramage with the large fleet of yellow delivery boxvans? Now gone and the last I heard they were blaming it on a new computer system that had taken over a year to install but never worked properly.Went for serious money ISTR.
I always felt a bit sorry for their drivers having to go in and out that road every day.Not exactly the best place for a distribution company.
Talking about Onward.Did they go down the tubes or were they swallowed up?
Mark.

Hi Mark, that would be Ramage of Glespin wouldn’t it? I used to get it wrong way round and call them Glespin from Ramage  Their biggest competitor would be Blue Band Motors from Lockerbie I suppose.
And Jim,where did you see Manx Independent and are you sure you want a photo of one - it will be an uninteresting modern - day motor,a bit too new for this thread.

Onwards used to fuel up at the Caledonian at Abington, they had the some of the first Dafs in the U.K. funny looking things with what was originally the Ley land 350 engine.

As said before different Ramage.
