jost 5th wheel

on our new motors with jost 5th wheels theyve got the drop down clip with the wire pull, why would they also have chain and dog clip on them, cant find any holes to put dog clip through and if i remember right the scania i had on hire only had drop down clip and wire pull, no dog clip.
the other strange thing is only two of the trucks have the chain and dog clip , mine just has a drop down clip and wire pull

look above and about 1" to the left of the spring lever, theres a bracket and a hole to put the dogclip in, this stops the lever coming up locking it all in place

Some of them dont have dog dlips, if its the one i am thinking of you dont need it its got an l shaped bracket that has a spring attached which d4rops down to stop the handle from moving and awire attached too, quite common on Reanults theres no need for a dog clip.

been up this morn and had a good look in daylight and no bracket or holes for dog clip so boss is going to ring today to check out why there on there and why only two out the three 5th wheels have them on.
jammys description sounds like what ive got l shaped drop down clip and wire pull [ no need for dog clip]
anyway thanks for replys

The law is that if there is a dog clip, you have to use it. And if there isn’t , you don’t!!

looks like im o.k then harry as i havent got one   , looks like those other two are in trouble as theyve both got one but no holes to put them in[ that is dog clips were talking about of course]

Thats the Law…
We had new Mercs delivered ,some had clips & some didn’t. Mercs told us that if the clips were not there then they were not required by law. But I still used to go round the back of the fifth wheel to make sure the jaws had closed… :sunglasses:

yes did the same as you harry i went under with torch to check jaws, but even with 5 th wheels with dog clips i always did the same [ well it gave the lads something to laugh about :unamused: :unamused: ] , always been a bit, lot paranoid about trailer falling off, took me a few corners , waiting for the crash before i settled down last night

I was lucky ,I was on containers & changed the skelly about three times a year…

i came across one of these last friday. no dog clip but there was a hole for one so i defected it. apparently, there is no requirement for them on this type of 5th wheel but a lot of drivers insist on the dog clip being present so the company had all the holes drilled and dog clips attached. whether the dog clip is necessary or not, i will not comment but it didnt feel right not having one.

you dont have much choice on this one

That’s what my old Stralis had. It was a pain in the arse trying to stop it jumping back in when *un-*coupling, never mind it coming out by accident, so I never worried.

The replacement Stralis I’m in now has the L-shaped thingy described above, like the Scania I had in my last job, and it still bothers me despite having no problems before.

I’m another one who checks the jaws underneath in a paranoid fashion, btw, regardless of fifth-wheel type. Better safe than sorry.

My Actros has the L shaped catch to stop the handle coming out, and also a dog clip.

The hole for the clip is just above the catch, but clip fits through it sideways. In other words, you hold it parallel to the fifth wheel plate and slide it though. This being at 90 degrees to a ‘standard’ one.

I will try and get a picture tomorrow because it is not easy to describe what I mean, and I’ve probably not made much sense!

Im unfortunate to have a Messerschmitt as well, 54 plate Megaspace, and mine is exactly the same as yours, so i know what you mean even if anyone else doesnt! And i allways put the dogclip through, even thou some other drivers dont bother on theirs.

Yeah me too - I’m just that bit more relaxed with it in place!

I don’t consider myself unlucky at all. I chose a 2544 LS over a DAF 85 430 Space Cab, MAN TGA 410 and a Scania R124 420 HPI.

The DAF would be a very close second choice. TGAs are OK I suppose, but whatever do people see in Scanias?

I regularly do 6 or 700km a day in it and I’ve yet to find anything that leaves me less tired at the end of the day. The seating is the comfiest for me in any truck I’ve driven. If I have a night out, I find there is plenty of room to stand up / get dressed etc, and both bunks are fine for me.

I honestly find the Actros a great truck all round. I know that it is not particularly popular with many drivers, but I really like them. And mine isn’t a Megaspace either.

Here you go Ady1, this is what my one looks like when it’s in place: -

I hope this is of some assistance!
