Hi Andrew how are you ? I never took any coils that were stacked up that way. What was the reason for it ? Too me it looks madness !! Mind you when we took scrap bales from Manchester the only thing that was holin it on was an old sheet and rope ! I can tell every one that because Joints is not working now. Tony

Hello all, Chris W, youre right Stan Ross had some Multiwheelers (became Highway), from Eastleigh early 60s, with wells. Ended up with a franchise for them from Ross Garages, Penarth Road Cardiff I think.Gosh, I bought some rubbish off him! heavy breathers, like Avelling road rollers! What do you think of the "new intake", now the Tony Brown road show has had its curtain call? I think that Howard Quale will do ok, after all he was good with the NFU. Cheerio for now.

hi tony,
we are fine thanks mate.i only ever tipped “eye to the sky” coil at four steel drops.llanwern, trostre, ebbw vale and wisbech.to my knowledge they were loaded that way because of the customers de-coiling plants needing the coil to stand vertically.i know what you mean about the bales of scrap   .though several of joint’s drivers lost a few of them over the years.
regards andrew.

I think the well trailers in those days were 33 ft tri axles,John Summers ran some the same IIRC and a Staffs haulier whose name I can’t recall had some for the Shotton coil.
Tony “Arkwright open all hours” Brown was ok but yer man in charge now,Alan Bell is a good 'un Saviem, looks promising for the IOM even though the UK has robbed us of millions of VAT. I blame Lancashire for it,theres plenty of 'em over here, could do with some more Yorks stock to even things up a bit, although retired Kendal hauliers with pots of cash are more than welcome…

I reckon when Leylands brought out the Two pedal Beaver and AEC’s the ergo Mandator they were at the height of their respective fortunes as things only seemed to go downhill after that. The Two Pedal Beavers encountered problems although I re-call my mate at Brady’s,Eric, cracking on the one they had, well for as much as it could beat anything away from the traffic lights on Abbey rd. in Barrow !! The new Mandators were a disaster as well as I re-call that after the one they got at Brady’s proved so un-reliable that they cancelled the 6 new Mammouth Minors and got 6 6x2 Atki Silver knights with 180 LXB engines.Cheers Dennis.

Question Andrew, what would the likes of Cliffs night man’s shift consist of,what did he do to give him a full night ? I bought Scanias from all over the country Andrew and the new ones didn’t only come from Scania dealers either but Scania never gave me any grief they were only too happy to see us remain loyal , the worst dealers were Scania owned Scantruck in the s.east of England. We never let any of our motors anywhere near them,we carried them home first even for the odd warrenty job. Cheers Dennis.

Hi Dennis,
Ii depended on the work load.normally, the Shrewsbury night men would leave the yard early evening drop the trailer in the abbey after a break they would go back loaded for the north.in busier days, they would tip in the midlands on the way home or tip and load llanwern back to port talbot change trailers and back to Shrewsbury.they also worked on a Sunday morning to make their money up.A subbie of joint told them about a good deal he had on a new merc from Leeds,so when joint bought one,the merc dummy was really spat out    Merc really didn’t like it,how times have changed.
Regards andrew
