As I have been told on very good authority that only a record has to be taken explaining why the infringement happened eg a written explanation in a dairy.
Edit “No it wasn’t a CPC trainer”
I would say yes. Because either a tacho chart or a paper print out is an official record, and should be completed as such, in the case of a digital print out it would include driver card number etc…
The above advice to do two copies seems sound advice, one for employer and one for the employee to carry for 28 days. Relying on a diary entry to satisfy an employers record keeping requirements and possible roadside monitoring just seems daft. I don’t think it would be enough. Thats just my take on it though.

Yes it does - whoever told you otherwise was wrong. The reason for making the entry on a printout is essentially to show that it was a contemporaneous record (diary entries can very easily be made days, weeks or even months after the event). Good job it wasn’t a CPC trainer then

Yes I will agree with your response, and it does make logical sense.
However I will take this info to the person who has said only a record needs to be taken, eg a note in a dairy, and post the response.
This person has never been wrong in the 9years I have know them regarding rules and regs, which just makes it more interesting.
Dannyf:
now what would you do
he has gone over the 4:30 no problem as he had parked up and had 1 hour brake but the guy forgot to put it onto rest
on return trip if was coming up on the dash to take his break so what did he do ■■
Pulled the card and did the 1hour 20min back to the garage with no card in
… and many here remain convinced dcpc is not needed!
