They were called John M Young Ltd of Langholm, they ran about 15-20 ERF’s & Fords, they had a depot in Shipley. No longer in buiness.

I believe that they were taken over by United Carriers - I went up to Langholm to collect a pre-war ERF 6-wheeler in John M Young livery and deliver it to the British Commercial Vehicle Museum in Leyland, That would have been about 1997 - pretty much everything in the yard everything was in UC livery except the yard shunter, which was in full Robson’s livery.

I remember both John M Young and Cyril Whitleys, my Dad, Terry Hall, drove for them for years. He did a lot of BMK work from Liversedge to Kilmarnock, I also remember doing a lot of Shipley to Leicester in the earlier days. Both with a Bedford (SWR 879L) sad eh? I even remember the reg number!
Then, when John Young came along, he did the night trunk from Shipley to Langholm in an A series ERF, 120 Gardener, just enough power to pull a skin off a rice pudding, air con though, nah not really, it was a hole in the floor!!
I remember Roger Whitley and Vince (heavy as he was called) any one else got the faintest idea what I am on about?

Just browsing and spotted this one. John Youngs used to run down from Scotland into Hanson Haulage depot down Leeds road which may account for your seeing them around Huddersfield. This would be before they opened a depot in the area.Nice fella the driver as I recall, I helped him unload a few times. Talked a bit funny though.

i drove for jm young at langholm for 9years in 80s&90s mostly in scotland good firm ,sorely missed.good bunch of lads.

delivered fuel to langholm depot in 70s and 80s, there was a small stream next to the fuel tank with fish in it.

that stream next to the fuel tanks was used quite often!!! if you had a birthday or any other occasion,if the rest of knew about ,you finished up in there.not very nice at 6oclock on a frosty morning.
