I was offered a job at jl magna park last year, can’t remember the exact details but the shift pattern was quite attractive, a lot less weekend work than I am used to ( though some ). You work a different shift pattern during the months leading up to and just after Christmas, you work more weekends during that period ( iirc )

Hourly rate wasn’t anything spectacular. Each shift is based on 9.5 hrs, if you finish in 8 you go home early yet you’ve still work your 9.5, if you work 12 hrs you get 2.5 hrs overtime.

Pension seemed better than most nowadays, jl finance it after 5 years service, before that they contribute towards it.

Interview was a little extreme, bearing in mind youre there for a driving position.

Good luck, they seem to look after their staff - ’ partner’s ’ far more than most companies.

Is there much handball?
got to watch my back lol

I applied for PM shift, there was a waiting list of existing drivers who wanted early starts.
JL were trying to avoid loaded trailers sitting at store premises waiting for staff to unload them the following day, so they introduced ’ self tip’, the driver had a camera strapped to their chest ( for their own safety, as it was said to me ) tips the trailer and reloads with empty cages.

Whether it took off or not who knows,.

Other than that it is just trailer swaps.

This is at least the third time this year they’ve advertised that shift. I assume people are getting in and then transferring to earlies?

My son is currently doing a HGV apprenticeship with them and they seem to look after there drivers all i have heard is good stuff and they even have time to eat greggs steak bakes which is always a sign of a cushy job

Thats great thanks, got my interview tomorrow morning… so fingers crossed.

regards

How did it go? Did you get the job? I’ve heard the assessments are quite tough there.

Yeh got offered the job but ended up turning it down because of the money. Shift rota was mon to fri with 1 sat and 1 sun in every 6 weeks. £10.74 ph and then a shift allowance depending on start time. 7pm was 23%. With annual bonus and perks might be worth it… i didnt want to rely on bonus though just in case.

Just over £13 an hour then at that start time?

Yeh worked out on a 47.5 hr with 1 hours unpaid break about 32700

47.5 hr week i mean with 1 hr unpaid break per day. I think the 11am start worked out roughly 29k.

Overtime paid at flat rate. Sounds like im doing it down but I do think it would be a good place to work. I just cant bring myself to taking a pay cut albeit for a better company and probably better working conditions

I work for sainsburys at the moment , we earn really good money £15.58 per hour plus £2.24 night rate. My depot is closing in the near future and it looks like I’m gonna have to take a big pay cut. I was considering john Lewis as it’s close. The drivers at jl that started after a certain date get time and a half after a certain hour I belief.
How was the assessment ?

Some of the old guys are on double time, most are on time and half but the new guys are offered single rate.

The whole thing takes about 4 hrs.
First an eye test.
Then 27 question fill in the gap type test.
45 minute driving assesment.
Then an interview.

If you go for it just be thorough with your vehicle checks and no matter how slow you think your driving…driver slower.

The guy Jerry that interviewed me was sound and it was more like a chit chat.

Oh they check for infringements aswell so if youve got loads you may want to wait 5 weeks so they dont come up

Nothing really to worry about. Good company

Thanks for that. My place everyone is treated the same . I think it would bother the hell outta me if I was getting single rate yet the others doing the same job are getting more. Can’t be a union there or at least a strong one
