New RDC at Milton Keynes likely to result in job losses elsewhere.
i suppose it was inevitable really, Waitrose only ever had a half-arsed attitude towards the Aylesford RDC, and apart from new signage it hadn’t really received any investment since the days when it was a Safeway RDC in the 1980s.
Going by the definition of ‘Regional’ Distribution Centre how can a depot in the Midlands be part of the South East ‘region’. While the comment that the Midlands RDC has already taken over much of Kent’s work might explain why our local Waitrose has become a gamble as to whether it has the stock of what you want to buy or not.To the point where I’ve already being saying why bother with the proposed expansion plans for the shop when they can’t even keep the shelves of the one they’ve got stocked up.
To be fair Carryfast, the smaller supermarkets adopt the ndc approach rather than rdc one. 2 or 3 centres to serve the whole country, rather than upwards of 15 like the big boys.
I once went to Aylesford and spent 6 hours tipping 3 pallets.
Despite me telling them it was 3 pallets, once I’d noticed the truck go on and off 5 times I went to the window, but the office bods had gone for dinner.
Shouted through the curtains but I think perhaps the chap unloading was not of Anglo Saxon origin.
It actually turned out that he was, but was a bit mutton.
So my trailer got emptied. And by the time the office bods had come back the warehouse staff had become super efficient and got all my stock into the racking.
Unfortunately there had been a memory breakdown and the rest of the time was spent finding the said pallets.
I used to be a manager for Safeway. Now I know why they got bought out by a bunch of whippet-■■■■■■■ flat cap fans.

Those were the days… Big bucks on agency there. Same rates as now in fact!
This must be the benchmark place where “wages for drivers have stood still for 20 years” one hears about in this line of work…
