Yea, but it’s Monday - Friday, optional Saturdays, 37 hours and home for tea everynight. A cracking pension which you can retire on at 55.

That’s true, I passed to be a VOSA vehicle examiner (sorry) but refused the position on money grounds, yes the hours and perks were good but I was making in two days what I was offered for a week including overtime.
Government jobs are never well paid unless you wear a bowler hat and are one of the old boys.

I don’t think there would be many successful applicants from among the membership on here if some of the written comments and apparent attitudes are anything to go by.

Thanks for posting the link. I’ve thrown my hat into the ring.

You are talking rubbish. I worked for the Government for 20 years as an Instructor/Examiner and was very well paid especially after I was established.
Wage scales have changed over the last few years so not as good as it used to be but there are always plenty options for promotion and better money.
I retired at 58 and have a good pension.
Good job if you are ambitious and want away from long hours.

Why would you go through all the process and then turn it down?
You would have known the wage before you applied.

As I was self employed with a couple of wagons at that time I had to make hard choices because of the lack of decent work, I saw the advert and applied, at the same time as this was going on, in fact after the final interview I had confirmation that a contract I had been working on had been signed off and accepted, it had taken me almost four months of negotiating to get this contract but it meant employment for another three drivers at least over the following two years, I discussed this with a guy at VOSA who said that there would be no conflict of interest as long as I employed a full time TM, this seemed a pointless waste of money as I would be the best man to manage my own business so I turned down the VOSA job - simple economics, but really I did not have to explain myself to anyone here.

I’m in…

I looked into this job when I got out the army in 99, id been doing testing in the army for three years by then, but decided against it. Not for the cash, you don’t get a fortune in the army anyway, but more the Ts & Cs which aren’t really explained there.
You had to go to their place in Bedford for a month to learn to be a tester, then you had to do a minimum amount of tests per day, then found out, although you can work out of the nearest to your home it’s not guaranteed, you have to go where they need you. The pay scale was dependent on how many tests you completed.
All that might have changed by now though. Still doesn’t seem much cash for the job involved & as I’m on more I won’t be bothering.
It’s fairly stressful taking out people on tests, had some beltas doing it in the army.

Funny how all we ever hear from operators & the likes of the RHA is “driver shortage”, whilst the DSA are apparently constantly overwhelmed with candidates, hence this nationwide recruitment drive for examiners, plus driving schools are hardly scratching about for custom.

I maintain my theory, that in fact plenty enough people train to up to be HGV drivers, but don’t stick it out when they come to terms with the reality of the job.
