He’s probably right but the more the price increaeses the faster the economy will collapse but most of that price will still be made up of tax and while there’s still North Sea oil left there’s no reason why we should be paying a lot more than the Saudis at the pump.
Which leaves the question as to why would the government wish to take such a suicidal course with the economy in which we’re giving an advantage to our competitors that we shouldn’t be .

Best thing the guvmint can do for our economy is a cut in Tax for Diesel used in comercial vehicles over 7.5t. Even drop it all together for a period. The resulting drop in shop prices would encourage people out to spend, generating growth and jobs. Keep private road fuel at its current tax rate.
Sorry, but I don’t see how scrapping the fuel duty for commercial vehicles completely would make a blind bit of difference to the greater economy.
The “fuel component” of the transport cost of most consumer good represents a tiny, tiny portion of the retail price of the goods. The government dropped VAT down to 15% and it didn’t make any noticeable difference to the average person, and that represents a much bigger reduction in costs to the average consumer than the tiny amount that would be taken off as a result of reducing the transport cost.

It’s all VAT and road fuel taxation that needs to be got rid of.
At present there’s around £25 billion pa lost to the economy in fuel duty and VAT that could stay in everyone’s pockets instead to help them pay off their mortgages faster and pay for goods without borrowing money to pay for them or going without altogether so less personal debt and more money to spend in the economy and less costs on the transport industry to move goods.
Added to that is all the other VAT charged on goods and services that all goes into the EU all for the privilege of having a trade deficit with the place and free movement of cheap east european labour that reduces wage levels and therefore spending power even more.
Abolish the welfare state. Deficit gone and suddenly millions of bone idol people who think the world owes them a living are economicaly active. GDP shoots up 10% and the Great is in front of Britian once again.
Those in genuine need, a tiny minority, helped by charitys.

Great idea but would the Tory zb’s give us back all the taxes and national insurance that they’d probably still want for nothing.
But if we’re all getting paid enough for what we do,like the zb bankers and the MP’s,there won’t be any need for charity because like them we’ll all be able to afford private provision for health and social security instead of using taxation to subsidise low wage employment.
If that was the case it would be a lot more than 10%.
