As you all probably know I am a car mechanic working in a garage for £8/ph.
A local haulier has offered me a job as his workshop foreman for £7.72/ph!!
I can’t accept a job with a great deal more responsibility for less money.
I would love to take it but it just don’t make sense. I’m really dreading calling him tomorrow with my decision as he has offered me employment before a few years ago and I declined but I would be mad to accept this, wouldn’t I ?
be honest with him, tellhim you have a better paid job as much as you really want the job say you cannot afford a pay cut and if he was willing to pay say £8.50 an hour then you would consider it. if you feel away about saying it over the phone email him then when he calls you can say did you get my email it will break the ice and put the ball backin his court for him to decide.
but on the other hand even though it is 28p an hour less what hours will it be will you be doing more or less work etc is there a bonus scheme involved.
think long and hard as it could be a good or bad desicion
I’m not sure I fully agree that this is something you should say no to stright away. There are things here that are not covered in your OP so I will try to read between the lines.
You state you are a car mechanic asking this question on a trucking website about a job offer from a haulier. So I am assuming you would at some satge wish to get your LGV licence or that you have it already and want to break into LGV driving as a career?
This may be your foot well and truly into that door, is he offering to put you through your LGV training if you dont alredy have a licence? Could there be other opportunities in that you would make contacts in the industry that I am assuming you wish to enter. Could you get a Hiab ticket or something out of it that would assist you in another Job change in a couple of years time.
Only you know all the details, I am just saying think with a long head and dont just focus on the 28p pay cut in the here and now. Even if you only got some training out of it like a HIAB ticket, it would take you a lot of 28p’s to save up for it and pay for it yourself
Hi sorry I should have said, I already have my cat c licence.
I had applied for a job with him years ago albeit unsuccessfully. He has a vacancy and has asked if i would be interested but I have said no as i can’t afford the pay cut plus there is also the problem of having to drive for my Father-In-Law at weekends so it’s a no go really
It is a nice feeling to be able to say, “Sorry I would love the job, but I can’t afford to work for you.”
And the more people that do that is the only way wages in haulage can rise. Obviously if anyone is out of work £7.72 is a cracking hourly wage, but only for driving, not for taking responsibility in the workshop

Yep I would normally agree but look at his location
