I have just been offered a job at Eddie Stobarts which I have accepted. I have had a confirmation email and is says at the bottom the offer is subject to satisfactory references. I have been with agency for 6 months so no problems there for a reference, my previous employer was an insurance company and i was sacked for messing up a policy and i am wondering if this will cause my job offer to be withdrawn, they never asked me during interview my reason for leaving. Anyone got any ideas?
From what I understand of HR… most companies will just ask the basics …i.e Employed from this date to that date… usually in a tick box questionnaire… its not in the best interest of any company to give out a bad reference as if it ever got back to the employee then we are talking deformation of character
OnlyAlan:
Unless they have specified otherwise, give them one employer reference and one personal one.
it asked for your current and previous employer so i gave them… no option for a personal one unfortunately, i start the course next week and was offered the job 2 weeks ago so fingers crossed i will be ok… thanks for replying
I dont think many companies actually bother asking for references from other companies since the law changed a few years ago.
A company can not give a bad reference but they can refuse to give a reference
I wouldn’t worry about it, my current employers checked with the company i did my apprenticeship with as my reference…and even though I had walked out and pretty much told them to take the job and shove it they had nothing but nice things to say and i even have a job on agency should I want to return. But i hope it never comes to it
So i wouldn’t worry too much, and congrats on the new job!
