Job interview for dhl driving for next though

I obviously don’t know, but it sounds like just about all newish trucks are Auto.
So I really wouldn’t worry yourself mate, and if as you say they are willing to help train you if needed, it’s not a problem! :grimacing:

Well, I say that, but let’s see if you get out of the depot gates first!

Interview tomorrow 10am needless to say im bricking it right now! :grimacing:

You will be fine pal, you’re the son of God!

And the worst then can say is no mate! Which probably isn’t likely as there does seems to be a rise in driver demand, if not in pay.

You know the score, so just be yourself and keen as red hot mustard!

Best of luck mate!

‘There does seem to be a rise in driver demand, if not in pay’.

Can you elaborate on that one, please.

I believe yt03 is still waiting for you to pick your arse up?

If you do get a 4 over 4 manual, and you have never driven one before, then I suggest you stick to a simple proven pattern: 2,4 (flick switch up) 5,6,7 (about 30mph) , 8 (40+)
Look ahead and if there is any hint you might have to stop in a minute (especially approaching roundabouts) then get speed down to 20mph, get it into low range and 4th in plenty of time. You can then carry on in 4th at most roundabouts, or stop and drop to 2nd again.
Only other tip is to avoid stopping in high range, some trucks dislike moving to low range when stationary. Hence bit above about leaving yourself plenty of time to get into low range.

After doing this sequence a few times it rapidly sinks in and becomes natural. All the best for the assessment.

Ash

If you hear of anything class 1 that way with DHL as your in Basingstoke…give a shout… might be worth a look

Every depot is different, some may have the same type of truck but in manual instead of auto. Manuals are nothing to be scared of, my first experience of driving a manual was when I was given the keys to a 26ton MAN loaded with eggs to go to Asda in Erith. Opening the door expecting an auto, I was in for a shock! Dartford crossing in a manual that I’ve never driven before, in rush hour!

Well done Ash. Its nice to read another positive post. I found at first, that store deliveries required far more patience than I had anticipated. My experience was of members of the public abandoning cars in ridiculous places. In the loading bay, across the hatch markings, etc. Furthermore, the odd member of staff will try and take the ■■■■- " No driver you have to do this " or, " The other drivers take it upstairs and handball " etc, etc.

From a driving point of view, store deliveries are excellent for sharpening your parking/reversing skills. Sometimes I found that a number of shunts were required, and this infuriated some people. (The same people that would moan if the shelves were empty).

In these situations I found it best to simply ’ ignore ’ the impatient folk and simply concentrate on the task in hand. I still do this now in my artic. If I have to do a 3 point turn across the road, then I just get on with it. Now and again I get the odd tool who paps his horn.

Which I answer with an extra ( usually not needed ) 2 shunts. Childish but satisfying.

I will do mate but already spoke to him regarding class one and nearest depot is hunger ford or somewhere silly miles away so that’s out the question :frowning:

Thank you bever aha sounds like my jobs gonna be just as fun putting a class 2 down small side roads with people parked like idiots just to make a delivery I can’t wait gonna be awesome  haha an extra 2 shunts that has cracked me up not childish at all very entertaining though  and just slightly ■■■■■■■■ it if it’s a manual because I obviously have not drove a manual lorry that’s all

Actually remembered this thread today, it seems the common truck for Next is a 60 plate Volvo FL or FE. My guess is that it would be auto.

Hope this helps little

Thats what it seems to be round here, but we already said, don’t be worried about it being a manual. Unless its used as part of a W+D setup its unlikely to be a 4 over 4 because it will be around 12 ton.

Have only just seen your post via my phone thank you very much I will watch when I get home  and thank you reader yes def not w+d it’s actually box units already loaded for you that you drop on your lorry it’s sat on legs and you drive under it so sounds interesting doing that for the first time lmao ( can’t quite remember what the proper name for it guys don’t judge lol )

De-mountable boxes mate.

eagerbeaver:
De-mountable boxes mate.

Not big whitey cubey thingy? :open_mouth:

It’s all in the name Ash, or rather the video title!

Be aware-on this video it does not show you the need to fold your rear lights in. I am assuming at Next, the rear lights are situated narrower than the lights on the de-mountable moffet 26 tonner I last drove.

When you drive into the body, there are two twistlocks at the front to secure.

Thank you very much for the advice guys! haha I couldn’t see the name of the video on my phone  and yes of course there called demountable boxes It was in my head somewhere but I just couldn’t bring myself to think of the name lmao
