Job hunting minefield

The company I’ve driven for went into voluntary liquidation last Friday, got the everybody got the email telling us on Sunday afternoon! Talk about no notice lol.
Anyway, 1 driver is finished already like nearly all the lads in the manufacturing factory but 2 of us are to be kept on for a few weeks to get made and payed for products to the customers then we’re redundant like everybody else. Sad day. [emoji17]
I’ve decided now is the time to get out of multidrop site work which I’ve done for many years with this place and 12 years at wavin previously.
So……what to do now I’m asking myself. Indeed is full of work but trying to work out who to trust isn’t easy. I’d love to do something different but I can’t do anything that pays enough.
Anybody else been in a similar situation? What did you end up doing and how did it work out?
Idle musings really but thought I’d share.

Whereabouts are you?

Sorry to hear, but hope this turns into an opportunity for you.

I’m in Auckley near the doncaster airport.

Sign up with a driving agency and check out potential employers by working for them before you commit to full time.
I never do more than two weeks on the same run and chop and change between companies and days and nights to suit myself.
Currently working Sun-Weds pm starts as my daughter has just started a new job on 2-10 Sun-Thurs. I’ve dropped down to four days because I can, mainly due to current pay rates being 50% more than this time last year.
Just tell the agency when YOU want to work and they WILL accommodate your request. If they don’t then bin them as it’s a drivers market.
Spend a bit of time choosing the right agency for you as the power is in your hands now not theirs.

Yeah, right. The initial boom has already slowed down, the perceived driver shortage has not turned into people waiting outside company gates with bags of money, and the supermarket rates are already going down. I’ve not had an agency contact me for two months, for lucrative occassional one off shifts. I have been contacted twice, for full time jobs, which have long term benefits. One of which I’ve taken up.

Agreed. There was a flurry of agency texts a few weeks back with higher rates, now back to the normal drudgery and fewer texts too. Must get round to blocking their numbers one day.

Double post

It has been 6 weeks since I made a serious effort to change career, and still doing a ton of research beyond reading for a licence.

At this rate however, I’ll have my licences, so I want to get ahead of the curve and have things lined up ready for when the proverbial rubber hits the road.

Can anyone recommend any agencies in the East Mids region?

Forget about using Indeed as you’ll only get frustrated trying to weed out the shysters. If you decide to hold on while the old job petres out, then head into Doncaster and have a wander around the agencies in the town centre, afaik there’s everyone from Staffline, best connection and pertemps in town. There’s even Taskmaster over by the railway station. This should give you about 10 weeks work before Xmas as an income stopgap while you figure out your next step

Assuming you’ve got 2 years under your belt already - Agency would be the way to go.

Tell them what you are looking for, and don’t be shy…
There’s enough of a “shortage” that you can at least pick and choose the shifts and venues you want, albeit not necessarily the top money to begin with…

General Haulage via Agency - still pays somewhat lower than the Supermarkets via agency.

Yeah, been in the game since ‘95.
I last did the agency thing in about 2000 when I moved to the doncaster area. I didn’t enjoy it then so I doubt I will now. I know for you lads chasing the big take home pay or the flexibility of when you work it’s ideal but I’m not into all that. Just want a steady Monday to Friday gig with a couple of nights out a week where I become part of the team and not just another agency bod. My mates on night at macintyres. He’s been happy with them for a few years so may go there.

What do you mean shysters? Are there agencies making up jobs or pay rates?

This, all day long. ^^^^^^^

Ken.

Indeed seems ok to me , that’s where I got my current agency job , had no issues , 3 days a week , £20-£25 ph , you get sent to a different place every day , you get the crap , long shifts , London bit while they give me the 3 days I’m happy enough
The problem with working for these companies is they want 5/6 , not interested in 3/4 day weeks .
I was very anti agency but I can see the attraction at the minute , if things change will have to see what’s around
Best of luck & I hope you find what you want
