I applied for a class 1 job at the beginning of August and I have just had a reply today!
As a class 1 driver with 34 years experience and a clean licence, I find this astonishing
that in this digital age that we live in of instant communication, an employer who incidentally has
banners on their fence advertising for drivers has such disrespect for potential employees that they
wait nearly 3 months to respond.
Can anybody beat this?
I sincerely hope not but I’ve a feeling that someone is going to.
Yep, took me that long to get into where I am now, which is hands down the best job I’ve ever had.
The days of just ringing the gaffer Friday morning because you’re home late and getting a new job by Friday afternoon are over.

A cynical person might be wondering if the approach of Christmas was anything to do with the timing.
Yes i can beat that, sometime in the 80’s the TM of one of the petrol companies told me i was the next one in, i’m still waiting for that call
So much for the driver shortage then…
Ken.

Obviously no driver has gone to the super highway in the sky or retired since you were promised to be the “next one in”!!!

Sorry but that’s exactly how you find a good job.
If you’re waiting for companies to advertise rather than proactively seeking you’re doing it wrong.

I would write back something like “I have already retired from trucking but my son recently got his license so if you’d like to consider him for the position instead?”
If a job is advertised and you apply online then yes you wait and wait,
I know I could pack my job in now and be working tomorrow the amount of jobs going in my area, most of them are rubbish jobs though,
Good hauliers round my way don’t advertise either, old school and like you to walk in and show yourself or ring up,in fact they don’t even have a website
Least you got a reply. I’ve applied to various company’s over past 6 months not 1 had decency to even say sorry your not sucsefull were keep.your details on file.

Green motors by any chance?
The job was with a well known northern supermarket chain, but to be honest I don’t think it matters how good the job is, its about manners and respect, if a company places an advert for drivers the least they can do is respond when someone answers the ad, and the ignorant so and so’s who don’t answer at all are even worse.
I suppose this is a product of modern style “I’ve been on a course” management, which seems to go hand in hand with winkle picker shoes and suits one size too small, culminating in hi fives all round when they’ve achieved something by pulling the wool over some poor sods eyes.
Yes I know I’m a moaning old git but to be honest it seems to be one of the few things I’m allowed to be these days!

But you’re not the least bit bitter that they took a while to get back to you.
no not at all… much!
I’m getting in my TARDIS and going back to 1970 where i walk into a local haulier…Me ‘Wassup, any jobs going ?’…Them ‘i lad, can tha be here at six in the morning ?’…Me ‘yep’…Them ‘ok, we’ll see you then’.
The problem is when you apply the place you apply to has no admin staff all the applications are sent to an office miles away.
Hence the delays, once upon a time you got a form from the gatehouse or whatever not any more, our place is 4 to 6 weeks and then they don’t advertise the pay which is another problem for applicants, experienced drivers like the OP go elsewhere the result being a depot full of imbeciles who would struggle to find their way out of a revolving door.
My advice speak to employed drivers if you can and be patient the right job will come along.
I give it around a month, then I send an Email telling a prospective employer when I applied and that I haven’t heard from them,when/if they reply telling me the job has gone I usually reply ‘‘well, thank you so much for letting me know, just glad I am not working for such an ill mannered pxxxk such as yourself, goodbye’’,sometimes I get an answer other times I don’t,it don’t get me anywhere but it gives me a little satisfaction.
I’ve never applied for a job, I’ve never written a cv, since leaving the military I’ve had four jobs and with each one I’ve merely turned up and basically said “this is me, this is what I’ve done, this is what I can do. Any jobs going?” It’s worked every time.

Started this job early August but applied on line at Easter after being made redundant. Never heard anything and took the worst job ever at a skip firm. Applied on line to my current job still nothing. Walked out crappy skip firm rang current employer and went from being unemployed at 11 am to employed by 1pm.
They were really apologetic about the previous applications, my depot never had them forwarded from head office.
