Jewsons builders centres

Hi,

Anyone ever worked for jewsons as a driver on the hiab / crane delivery roles?

I wondered how much the pay is, as the job just says good pay. also how many deliveries etc and what the job is like.

Also whats the drivers test paper you have to do if you get an interview?

Thanks Guys.

These builders merchants jobs have been advertised consistently for years. The problem has always been the money according to drivers I’ve spoken to.

I went to an interview a few years back. They would send you to Leeds for a 4 day training course I now see them advertising on agency and you have to be available to work at other depots within about 50 miles.

PM sent

hi robin
i work for jewson’s, i use to be a driver on hiab work amout of deliveries done by a driver will depend on how good you are and distance involved on each drop,so working in a major city will affect how much you are payed compared to working in a branch in say the middle of wales.
when i was on crane work average for me was anything from 12 to 15 drops per day again depending on distance and weight ,most loads you will be at max weight when you start each run .
from my point of view i enjoyed it and was able to move into another role within the branch.
if you want anymore info please pm me .
ps. test paper for me was a map and i had to find each village and route it in correct way.(this was 10 years ago)

ive worked for Jewsons via an agency an the money is indeed crap 19000 5 days a week and every other sat, plenty of tight maneuvers an all. There advertised every year around this time because Jewson are movin into there busy time and people want hols so plenty of agency work goin. Anythin else u want to know let me know.

Not something I enjoyed hugely but some people like it. Only did a day or two on the agency.

Kit is generally good and well looked after, pay is probably the worst I’ve ever accepted for a days work.

Paperwork isn’t their strong point from a drivers view. You get terrible addresses, like “Green Farm, Looserville” and that’ll be it, no phone number or nothing. Lots of house deliveries, but similarly lots of large building sites. Need to use your brain in planning your drop order rather than just following the sheet.

If you’ve got 10 house deliveries and 5 large sites then its no good doing the sites last as they might knock off at 5, or some of them don’t accept deliveries after a certain time. Yet a private house will probably have someone in till 7pm (or later of course but there has to be limits somewhere!)

The stores I worked for, for them, you came back when it was all gone, not when you’re due to finish, so although you might be employed as a “day” driver, it won’t be 9 till 5.
On the other side of the coin if you get a day with 15 drops, all big sites, then generally they’ll send a bunch of guys down to unload you and you can be off site in under 5 minutes, back to the yard, clean the truck up and home by 3 -stranger things have happened!

I’d certainly do it again, its better than some work as you do get challenged on a daily basis with very tight access and no 2 days are the same, but as has been said its not the best money BUT its a job, and these days thats better than nothing.
You could certainly do worse.

Alex

when i was doing it start at 8am back in yard to reload for next day by about 4-4:30pm then help with loading till 5pm home time!! i am employed not temp and we all ways had phone numbers and postcodes to help with deliveries, some branches are alot better than others !!!

I can attest to the crap addresses given as we do their loose aggregate deliveries; They tell customers “yes” and then said customers whinge “Jewsons said you WILL do it”. We’ve taken back a driver who was laid off during recession who had a stint on Jewsons inbetween and said indeed, money crap for all the hassle that goes with it.

I can’t think why it’s a secret so . . . standard rate of pay employed by Jewson would be £18.5kpa on salary. On agency I’ve seen anything from £7.50 to £10ph + OT. There’s a few employed drivers still in the system on up to £22k.

Some agencies offer a scheme where you are effectively employed by SGBD (parent co’) & guarenteed weekly pay but have to work at any branch within in the group in a 50-60ml radius. This is a good crack if you can get on it but beware the agencies who LIE that what they offer is the same scheme.

The quality of the job is dependant entirely on the branch. Some are good, some are pathetic. I’ve done lots over the years in the Notts Derbys area & politerly decline to work at some branches. Most are pretty good, it’s in the branches interests to look after their customers so although the answer to every question is usually yes they still keep an eye on what’s realistically achievable.

If I could live with £18.5k pa I’d jump at the chance of going perm with some branches. IME it’s a far better & more professional environment than most other builders merchants.

Agree with Chas not a bad job but poor pay

I used to work for Jewsons. The pay was 17k per year all in. there was no overtime payment but if I did any overtime then it was given back in lieu (ie early finish some days)

I used to enjoy the work especially the HIAB and I lost weight and regained my fitness during my time there.

The depot I worked for was a freakin nightmare though…it was really run by the sales team and some of the promises that they made to the customers put you under pressure.

Crap addresses was the norm. And they wanted your pound of flesh from you. My fellow driver was spotted in a laybe with his feet on the dashboard asleep by a customer who then grassed him up up. The sales team tried to bollock him un till he told them he was on break!!!

I was once asked why it took me ■■■ mins to get to a site and when I pointed out that the A road was 40 mph I wasnt believed lol!!!

My advice is to take the work cause you will learn how to get a lorry into impossible places and you WILL get fit! Just ignore the ■■■■■■■ in the sales office!!

msgyorkie:
Just ignore the [zb] in the sales office!!

I do this too, and ignore the transport office bods too when it comes to “wanted xam”. It gets there when I get there thankyou :sunglasses:

i think manpower/driver hire have the contracts

I’ve just noticed an irritating Jewson ad on tv; Almost as bad as those sodding Wickes ads featuring that stupid voiceover.

I work for a builders merchant although not jewsons it has to be said, the money is better.I have also had the dyslexic unpronounceable addresses, wrong postcodes, wrong customer phone numbers.

We do retail deliveries on behalf of B&Q, bulk items such as various types of paving slabs, sand, gravel, chippings and fence panels etc as well as utility companies and also the construction companies specialising in concrete drainage products such as gully pots and 1.5 ton chamber rings for water/sewage companies, some of the building sites we go to are very inaccessible to say the least, not to mention driving an 18 tonner down narrow residential streets (“pull yer mirrors in am coming through” !), having all the kids and parents videoing me with camera phones / camcorders gets on my nerves.

I am lucky as there is no pressure, boss never rings or hassles me just get there when you can ,he knows things do not always go to plan.
