A LORRY driver was airlifted to hospital after being crushed between his own truck and the wall of a toilet block.
The horror smash happened at the A12 truck stop at Boreham on Wednesday at about 3pm, leaving a 58-year-old man with serious trauma injuries.
An air ambulance was scrambled to the scene, along with two rapid response cars and an ambulance.
Air ambulance doctor Mike Donald said: "When we arrived we could see that the lorry had hit the toilet block, leaving the wall with considerable damage. The patient, a 58-year-old man, had been crushed between the lorry and the wall.
"He was conscious but in a lot of pain and distress. He had clearly suffered a fracture to his right leg, but my biggest concern was that he appeared to have suffered internal injuries to his chest and abdomen.
“We fully anaesthetised the patient and put him on life support. With the help of ambulance crews I carried out a surgical procedure on his chest and splinted his leg and pelvis.”
The victim, from Colchester, was flown to the Royal London Hospital, which specialises in treating major trauma cases.
“We requested that they have blood ready for the patient in case he needed a transfusion immediately upon arrival,” said Dr Donald.
“His condition was life threatening, but because we were able to treat him and get him to hospital so quickly, he was given the best possible chance to recover.”
Dr Donald praised the “excellent cooperation” between ambulance crews and police.
The patient is now in a serious but stable condition.
Police are still trying to establish what caused the crash.
