Jays of atherton and hamilton haulage

do you remember jays of atherton and hamilton haulage on hamilton street, hamilton haulage ran late 60s through to the 80s as far as i know and contained a nice lively bunch of lads called geoff, floyd, caddick and alan,[alan now runs an employment recruitment company in atherton],these lads drove and maintained a fleet of tipper wagons, they always found time to have a good laugh with my dad [kevin kirk] sadly killed in 1979 driving his beloved a series erf,i believe there now stands a nettos, tesco or aldi on the former site, very sad to see these good old firms vanish, not sure if jays are still going or not,any info would be great.

Yes, Jays of Atherton are still in business. I can also remember another Atherton company that ran blue LAD cabbed Leyland Comets, they did work out of Metal Box at Westhoughton, but cannot rememer the name (something Carriers■■?)

And D & B Bardsley? As I recall, David ran the recovery vehicles (wasn’t there a workshop too?) whilst Barry had a small haulage fleet.

Hiya,
Is it Clarington Coach and Haulage that you’re thinking of. Used to also do work for Bulldog Tools and Seimons.
There was also Claribel Carriers from Ardwick Manchester, don’t know if they had any other depots. Both were a darkish blue colour IIRC.

Ray

Thanks for that. No it was Wardle I was thinking of.

I worked for jays for about 2 years in mid 80s .People I remember are Alan Hull,Mick Nutter,Mick Knowles,Glenn simms Billy Roberts,Colin Clark,Tony Yates Old joe and Graham in the garage.Friday nights after work some of us would get in the rope and anchor on the corner along with Chris Black from Reliance and Alan Cartwright from FINNEYS.I remember Alan who was at Hamilton Haulage and ended up running a driving agency,he went blind unfortunatly, but I seem to remember he had quite a bit of work out of Barrs on north rd.IVE seen Jays name mentioned on the internet, but ive never seen any lorries knocking about? The old yard burnt down years ago.I remember being late back on a Friday many a time and having to call at Erics house on the main road for my money. The main work we did was Metal Box and Lyons soft drinks out of Swan lane Hindley to Hammersmith and load back out of there. One of the saddest times was the death of Billy Chamberlain :frowning: ,who got killed in an accident whilst loading at Swifts yard in Trafford Park.If I ever learn how ill post one or two pictures on here

Hi Sammy 1960
I worked for Jays for 36 yrs from the late 60’s
until they closed in 2001. You are right about Bill it was a vey sad day.
Bill was a great workmate always happy and joking, but he was unloading at
Swifts in Trafford Park and got knocked of the wagon when the stacker
driver lifted up a bundle of steel and the steel fell onto Bill. If you go
onto North West Trucks you will see some photos of the wagons including 2 I
drove JTE240 on Sandbach Services and the new Forden at Tatton Park. I
worked with all the drivers you mentioned but apart from Graham I dont see
any of them now. You mention old Joe but I think you meant old Sammy
Molynuex and Joe Mull the fitter. It’s nice to here comments from divers
of the past as most of them will be retired as I am. I hope they are all
including yourself enjoying life to the full. I do see William
occasionally and go up to their house at Christmas with a Christmas Card
as I have always done. Some one mention a haulage firm but could not
remember who it was I think it was Wardles from Westhoughton ( who
incidentlty Billy Chamblain worked for before he came to Jays. Well thats
it if I can be of any help in helping you to remember the times at Jays
feel free to get in touch. By the way my name is Tony Yates who you
mentioned. Take care now.

Cheers Tony.
