James Hunter & Sons WISHAW

Now trying to get facts right here But this ERF platform (Pup) isnt quite what it seems Now im not going to say to much but if i remember correctly that was one of GREER’s from Holytown ,now maybe someone else could finish this story

andrewhunter16:
THE GENERAL MANAGER A YEAR PREVIOUSLY FAILED TO PROPERLY SUPERVISE THE LOADING AND INSURING OF A CRANE BEING TRANSPORTED TO ARDROSSAN WHICH FELL OF THE WRONG TRAILER IN HAMILTON.
That cost me 50k. I could go on but during my late fathers illness many unscrupulous people screwed him and my family.

No disrespected intented here But i dont think its a General manager job to supervise the loading of a trailer .
But if you are Mr Hunter come tell us some more storys .Like what happened to the little shop at the bottom of Kitchener Street
I think i have a picture somewhere of you wearing Stocking and Suspenders do you remember

Greer did in fact have two ERF’s when I worked there in 1971, they were fitted with Van bodies & tailifts for use on the Honeywell Computer contract.

I drove the mercedes van on the same contract, & boy was that a license to print money, 25 miles to the hour plus two hours for each drop or pickup.

Dave.

Hi again guys. Is that the air cleared a wee bit? To listen to all of us you would think all of this happened yesterday. It was 25 years ago
for heavens sake. Scary or what ?
To get the thread started and in my haste to get a hold of some photos, for posterity, I probably felt I should give a wee bit of background
information on the firm as best I knew it, and bear in mind I was never an employee, so some of what I thought I knew was, on reflection,
anecdotal. Things that I had picked up from this source and that source and other “Facts” that were common held beliefs. What I should have
done of course was be less opinionated, especially on what was supposed to be a gentle dig at " Uni " education in an industry not at that
time noted for that requirement. I never for a minute imagined I would hurt anyones feelings. Naive or what? I can only apologise.
I think we can all agree with what trophyblue has already said about most of the big customers going to the wall in an earlier recession,
so it can only be speculated as to whether any transport firm could have survived and we can all remember plenty who were taken over
or finished up altogether. It does go to show how passionate we can get about the game though. Nothing else comes close.

Andrew as for the sussies and stockings, how much would the Screws of the World pay for that piccy ? Don’t be offended if I suggest not a
lot. They would probably assume some connection to the Tories  We can have some empathy with poor Harry and his fancy dress ■■■■
uniform escapade. “Seemed a good idea at the time”.
Do tell us your stories, minus the warts. We’ve enough of them ourselves. But equally important the photos. You must have heaps of them
surely, and lets be honest Hunters did have some interesting wagons and loads. Iv’e been promised more and as soon as I get them they’ll
be on here…jim

My first picture is One of the Marathons Driven By John Kay the picture was taken if i mind right at Helmsdale on old road this corners been bypassed now ,

This was taken at Gladhouse Resisvior driver was Big Tony in black Tshirt ,The Daf at the back was John Boyd From Ravenstruther (Lanark)

Another at Gladhouse i was up there with Graham Whitfield weeks before with the stepframe we got tipped and er mmmm had a problem getting turned

Heres Wullie Wink posing

Stuarty this time with beams for Hall Russells in Aberdeen

Think Mr Hunter should answer this one something to do with truck ,No Air ,Left ticking over with hand brake off , a phone call and a shop

Newbridge roundabout at end of M8 waiting on police

Graham Whitfield on left ,the stepframe never had landing legs and it ran away this was down at Beverley Nr Hull

Going up Berridale Brae John kay in front and Bill Kerr at back

Mount Vernon Again with Carriages

Spot the Driver

Maybury road Edinburgh

Big Peter Steering Skelatal Round Hemsdale notice the side marker boards

Lastly the slip road at Gretna at A74 long before the motorway was built

.

These Train Carriages Came from Millarhill Rail Depot Edinburgh this Picture is from rear of your last one taken on Seafield Road Leith where we stopped for food at a little cafe. They were taken to Patersons Dump Mt Vernon Glasgow and buried in a big hole ,i think there are at least 10 complete carriages ,windows doors, seats, everything apart from bogies buried in there , They were all wrapped up because they contained Blue asbestos ,The Roadtrain Had the Cranefruehauf Tr14 And the Volvo in Background which Hunters had as a demonstrater was pulling the Skelatal.

.

At Scotch corner with McKelvie waing for Police ■■■■■■.

That was further on than Scotch Corner Mckelvies trailer Did something It pick up a Cats eye and punched through the rear Quarter of a passing car

Getting it ready and checking.

The One at the back was the Ex Yuill & Dodds Fitter Russell …Lets say he had an eye for the job (pardon the pun)
I Believe I can fly…Must have been something in the tea.
Quite Glad these werent taken by the modern day digital camera

Who’s the drivers mate ? The boy.

Even i had to look at the first one to see who it was ,He looked quite tall and thin in these pictures i wonder what he looks like now

Your bringing back memories now Raymond. Vehicles and faces of old, I’ll need to dig out the few photos of Torness and the weekend bridge build at Aberdeen and put them on, if I can sus out how, cheers Jim.

Another couple of drivers from the 70s

Jimmy Lennox…still night trunking as far as I know
Frank Fleming R.I.P. Frank until his untimely end was with Cadzow

Hi jim is this mr B? AH says helloo how are ya … do you still have greyhounds?

What I wan’t to know is If Wullie Wink lets go of the overhang will it drag along the ground?..jim

Er No
Funny you should say that IWhen i worked for Mc Call at Govan i loaded 35m long overhead motorway gantry, onto a 22m long semi-low from one end of babcocks renfrew to other end and it did drag on road :unamused:

Why is nobody naming Personel or the car owners

unless there’s a prize to with it

Ok you drive a Hard Bargin theres a Mug Pen &Keyring as a Prize
Now No Cheating dont be asking C,S,M. for answers

Cheat ? Wouldn’t hear of it, and I know from the outset the top prize is out of reach but if you
have any compassion, er possibly a small consolation :frowning:

On the raft, Nearside front as it were, Andrew. N/S rear (showing too much thigh ) Wink McCartney.
O/S rear Big Tony ? ( 4 Wheeler driver ) In the driving seat, or was it a left ■■■■■■? Should know but…
bang goes the Mug.

As regards to the cars my only defence is I was subbied in through Tam Muir so how would I know.
Bang goes the pen. An informed guess tells me the Audi was Andrews and I believe he can be
seen through the smoked glass and the location location location is Pickerings/Allis Chalmers.
Other shots show the old garage and the yard (Any good pics of that AEC?) How am I doing ?
Is the keyring still achievable?

In the doorway on the left is Rab Husband and on his right, the late Alex Wotherspoon.

Any points to be gained for knowing the trailer is running on D 20s ? (Michelins  )…jim
