I recently came across a photo of a BMC Mastiff tractor unit in Hemphill livery. This one was unusual in having a second steering axle fitted directly in front of the drive axle. The registration number was VGE9H, and the fleet number 234. Does anyone know how many of these Hemphill’s had, and if anyone else operated them? And were they a Bathgate special, or converted by someone like Primrose, for example? Answers on a postcard, please…!
Wouldn’t think that Bathgate was responsible, all the four in hand six wheeled BMC’s that I ever worked on were Primrose conversions but they were rigid’s not tractor units.
Pete.

Here it is again.
Apparently it was on railhead shunting work and was fitted with a Norde second axle conversion

Peter Davies mentions it was plated 26t GCW with a Perkins V8
