James c ashworth of bradford

true only ever saw jack ashworth in a brown suit never saw him out of the office so no comment about his bits, was the metal fabricator an irish guy called frank?

i do remember a story eric watkiss told me, but only half of it  involved jack ashy squatting down in the yard to lift up a heavy drawbar or something, and his town halls making contact with a cold puddle - if i could remem ber the full story i’m sure it’'d be hilarious

think i’ve posted on here before, presumably around 1983 there was an RHA branch meeting and the subject of changing the limits to 38 tonnes came up, to which mr ashworth heckled from the back “well i ent droppin two ton for no [zb]er”

ashworths always had over engineered kit no chance of it breaking but the trailers were really heavy, the triaxles when the 38 ton limit came in were all twin wheeled no super singles then plus a large amount of chains, chocks, scotches the set of sheets, toolboxes big diesel tanks for the cheap stuff wouldnt like to guess how much they weighed empty,The balertrailers were even heavier about 3 ton of framework was stashed when they were loaded for home or being used on general haulage.

if thought he was scottish, but could have been irish, didnt get his name,a guy in his early sixtys with a beard.told me a tale about one of the drivers, might have been frank, pulled out of the yard with a load of tractors for the docks but he couldnt get out because a car was parked outside the fish shop over the road, anyway the driver went in to ask him to move the car because he was in a hurry but the car driver said no ,so jacks driver hit him got back in his wagon and somehow got round the car and went on his way.wish i got his name it was intresting talking to him.he knew jack robo,b.patefield

no bob lived and still does in a village called denholme about 6 miles from the m606 the guy you recall may have been bob fraser i think he lived somewhere over that way i saw him about 4 years ago in hellmans at bradford and he was an owner driver doing urgent jobs for them with a transit size pickup

Hi guy’s, this can only get better, I never worked for Ashworths, but I did work for Fielders/Chapmans/and A One, when they eventually bought them out, but we did all work together, I went to Fielders early 1960’s when I came out of the Army, and we were all going strong on the wool job, although it’s hard to remember most drivers after so long ago.
The same happened with the A One site, it started with a couple of drivers and escalated, so it’s great that some of the older end can get together and chew some fat, look on the A One site and you might even remember some of us from there. Good luck :-Jack Graham  :astonished: :open_mouth:  :sunglasses:  :unamused:

just looked on an international harvester video about the bradford ih factory called they built tractors there and at the end there is an ashworths sed atki in the lord mayors procession dressed up as the float for the tractor company and the images are stored at the bradford industrial museum so gonna have a look next time im off it could be a treasure chest!!

some photos at last three with loaded baler trailers one with tractors and an old atki outside liverpool docks enjoy

Any0ne remember Bill Brown [Long since died ] I used to drink with Bill in the Lilycroft Pub. Bill worked for Ashworths for years had one of the new ERF sleepers. Fell out big time with Old Man Ashworth orer something and got the bullet, Sued for unfair dismissal and got 3000. lasted Bill a couple of months you would have thought he had won the pools the way he spent the cash.
