Juddian:
Getting back to the OP, as in post not poster.
6 on 6 off would be hell for me, i find even a 5 day week drags interminably now so 4 on 4 off would be my preference, and every single shift you work will include one or more weekend day which needs to be factored into the pay offered…i work lots of weekends but premium pay is calculated into the salary.
However in 6/6’s favour, unless you were daft enough to use POA those 6 day weeks limit the number of hours you will do per day, and when booking holiday you’ll be off 18 days though whether you’d get 4 or 5 week’s worth of hols depends on whats on offer, and if away all week fewer commutes than any other shift pattern…so, whilst initially 6/6 looks like a grind it could be an excellent shift pattern if it suits you.
4on-4off was invented by companies, with their benefit in mind, because it gives full weekend cover, and allows a truck to do six x 15 hour shifts a week
. An unintended benefit for the driver, is the vastly improved work-life balance.
6on-6off was invented to entice drivers fro further afield, because it reduces the number of commute journeys. As Juddian also points out, taking a 6 day holiday, gives 18 days off, long enough to hop on a short haul flight to go home for just over a fortnight.
As an aside, those complaining about the "ridiculously " long hours, or “dangerous” shift patterns, might want to look at off shore rigs, or maritime shipping. Granted, oil rigs tend to be 14 day stints, but ships, 3+months away, and whilst on board, 7 days a week, on watch. 4 hours on, 4 hours off. 7 days a week.
