Yes,I’ve got a big one, trailer that is… I am regularly pulling these 2 metre longer trailers…
I have 37 years hgv driving experience, so i can handle them easily enough…
BUT, a driver I was talking to last night reckons that I should have done a training course and have a certificate and carry some sort of entitlement card…
I can’t find anything anywhere that says this is true…
Absolutely false…more barrack room drawl…carry on driver, the only downside is no extra pay… Years ago i worked for an international haulier and Davies Turner was our Agent, so we got some new length tilts, and our boss painted a white line at the back, and said, if any goods are placed over that line i want to know, well they did load to the back doors, i phoned the boss, and he told them to take it off, saying i paid extra money for extra length trailers, which in effect means i am carrying your goods across europe for free, so unless you pay me extra, that space is mine, they never backed down, and we never lost any work from them. He bought them for the return loads where he would get paid per box, which meant an extra few quid, but we would also ask for cash in hand to load over the line…Lubbly Jubbly.
Operators taking part in the trial of Extended Length trailers are supposed to be providing drivers with extra training - but the content of said training is not prescribed. There is no legal requirement for a card or certificate, and no offence is committed by a driver who takes one of these trailers out without having had any special training (although I daresay a Dim View would be taken of the company if there was an accident and it was shown that the driver had NOT been trained).
Many of the operators will of course have their own in-house authorisation schemes, some of which will involve the issue of certificates, special permits etc (the “blue chip” companies love that sort of thing…) and maybe this is what the other driver was misunderstanding.
m1cks:
We’ve got them and only drivers who have been trained/familiarised are allowed to use them. There’s no card or certificate you need.
We’re the same but we have to keep paperwork on us with a list of chassis numbers on and we can only pull a long trailer if the chassis number matches up, in otther words we couldn’t pull a hired or borrowed long one. We were told Vosa could ask for this list to make sure it all corresponds.
FALSE BS FROM MMTM IN AN RDC/ FERRY/ TRAIN/ BALCONY WAITING AREA! I remember 40’ tandem axles, then we got massive 13.6 metre tris, " ooooohhhhhhh drive you WON’T get that in here, too big see! " BS BS BS BS BS BS BS BS BS BS BS BS BS BS!
