Iveco stralis 540/560

Hi anybody got one of these ? whats the mpg like , what do think of the auto box , are they a good buy or not

the earlier ones i think all the 560’s were prone to overheating on long hill climbs and the auto gearbox is a nightmare when frieghted or in the cases of the one i have driven has been would regularly change gear 4-5 times between bottom and top of sliproad to end up joining motorway in same gear as was in at start of sliproad, but not to say they will all be same but that has been my experience of them

We run a 540 and it’s not much worse on fuel than the 430’s we have on bulk tippers, for some reason they fit the 430 with a 12 speed asTronic and the 540 with the 16 speed?? but the change is OK so long as you don’t press the pedal to ‘kick down’ then lift it a little then back to kick down. We find it best to only use 3/4 pedal to pull away so it doesn’t rev it’s conkers off between changes and only give it full gas once past 9th or 10th, this keeps the rev counter in the green zone so helps the fuel.

Driven hard on bulkers (always FULLY loaded) it can get into mid 6’s, driven sensibly mid to high 7’s, but don’t forget that a bulk tipper is one of the least ‘slippery’ shape & as mentioned, loaded means 44 tons!! & generally is about the same on fuel as our 460 FH Volvo iShift which is about the same age. PS, I’d buy a Volvo tho!!

I used to run four of the 540s, from a 54plate I got another one every 6months, each used to do a run to S Wales every night and then light duties around London being a trolly dolly during the day shift, the on board comptuer would tell me that they all did 8mpg + but pen and paper told a different story, the average was mid 7s, I did have a 430 too and this was only marginally better on fuel.

The gearbox is in my opinion very good, you need to use manual at roundabouts and traffic lights and on some hills (it cannot see, you can) and they all pulled like trains if you keep the revs a little higher than you would in a Scania/Volvo/Daf of similar power.

Dealer back up is their biggest enemy, some of the dealers are worse than bad

Best thing about them was that they were cheap, when I bought the first one it was only twice the price of a 6yr old Eurostar that I had gone to look at, admittedly that would’ve been a dear Eurostar, but they were still cheap lorries
