Aye I can see how it would āAffect their figuresā have you seen the waistlines on some drivers?
Good luck anyway.
Well Done!
Well done Tarrman, I can tell your pleased, hope you get first call.
What form does the training take ? Are you out on a wagon with a regular or is it classroom thing ?
Jim
I got told once I started my training I would be out with an experienced driver, then there would be some classroom work in between everything to get a bit more indepth knowledge of drivers hours/working time etc, then they would start me on the rigid first and get me doing a bit of shunting to practice the reverse. Then I imagine it would be a case of getting me up to speed. Iām all for having an induction to get used to setting the fridges/split coupling etc and then getting thrown in at the deep end with an artic start me on a few easy runs and learn that way. Iād even be willing to go in an hour early unpaid to get the wagon ready and then have enough time to pootle up to one of the stores and not affect their āfiguresā. I just wanna get driving lol. I suppose in the long run the wait will of been worth it.
Our warehouse to wheels works like thisā¦
Shunting for approx 2 years.
C training in-house. C test then out with a experienced driver for 2 weeks, then on the C for around 6 months.
C+E training in-house. C+E test then out with an experienced driver for 1 week then thats you on your own.
You get your drivers contract(more money) when you pass the C test and you also have to sign something in regards to if you leave within 2 years you reimburse them the training costs. Also there is a limit on 3 tests, if you cant pass then you need to fund the tests yourself. My pal Jim failed his C+E twice on daft things but that is serious pressure on the 3rd!
I can imagine! Iām not sure if it would of been longer had I not got my licences myself. Shunting for 2 years seems like an awful long time to wait but I suppose it would be much easier when out on the road.
Itās now official, had my letter of confirmation
Now got to wait for a start date which may take a couple of weeks.
Congratulations Tarrman. Hereās hoping that your hopes are realised sooner rather than later.
Just try and keep your excitement in check if you have to spend time shunting take it for what it is, a chance to really hone your reversing and, if using a road unit, coupling skills. Donāt rush things that are new, unfamiliar or strange. Trust your instinct and if in doubt ask someone that YOU trust and get out and look.
You get no credit for being quick and wrong but you can defend being slow and right.
Good luck.
Thatās brill news mate. Youāll be fine
Thanks all will update more when I know more.
Congratulations mate, Iām trying to go down a similar route to you for the second time Only difference I know the company Iām trying to get on for are good at keeping their word for this kind of thing as well as finding out a few people within the warehouse are now driving the lorries, so it gives good hope for ones self!
Just have to hope I get the bloody thing first though
Be sure to do a training diary, will be good to see how the company trains their drivers. Personally I think thatās how companies should work. But in all fairness most donāt get because they never ask.
Look forward to the update!!
Cheers
Jonny
Iāll try my best
