It's almost that time of year again

When the weather turns bad and all of a sudden the government announce that it’s now ok to go over your driving time, something they’d happily haul you infront of the TC for the other 45+ weeks of the year if you did it!
For me there is nothing more annoying that some politican announcing the HE is allowing a relaxation in HGV driving laws to make sure deliveries are made…he is “allowing” us to do MORE than 15 hrs a day,how very bloody good of him!

Remember unless you’re going over to benefit yourself (ie to get home) ■■ em!

*subject to a bad winter of course.

They seem to have restricted it to an extra hour driving, were as a few years ago there was no limit as long as you had your legal driving breaks, and it only covers certain areas.

I am not sure, but i think the hour relaxation only applies to milk tankers due to rural isolated farms.Hills and lanes in the ice and snow.

are’nt the milk tankers doing farm collections on logbooks/domestic hours rules?

Agreed bad winter or not, why is it deemed dangerous, unsafe and all the rest of it if you inadvertently go over your time, then get fined for it, then suddenly as if by magic the next day it miraculously becomes safe and essential, just because it suits them, (and at the same time incidentally, the fact that we are actually PROVED to be an essential service because of this is conveniently ignored) 15 hour days are too bloody long in modern times as it is, without increasing the hours.
I just worked to normal hours last time and ignored it.
They would never change the rules to suit us, and they continue to ignore shortage of suitable overnight parking and similar issues that are lacking in the job. So as you said …■■■■ em!

Allowing drivers to go over their hours may be one way the authorities “think” they can alleviate the perceived driver shortage this Christmas

I don’t think it applies to the 15 hours rule, just the 4.30 driving time!

Either way i wouldn’t entertain it

Yes milk tankers run out of “scope”…

Some companies run under domestic rules, but most run EU rules. Especially if they run road tankers too.

under GB domestic rules…out of scope on the tacho.

One of those Police documentaries ,PC Angus Nairn ,who was an ex owner driver, pulled over a bulk tipper.
The truck had a UK plate, the driver was working in the UK but was from Eastern Europe.
The load was contaminated meal from dead livestock.
The driver was arrested for forgery of his records but did not need to run on tachographs.
He showed Angus some bits of paper but he knew it did not match journey wise.
So what was all that about, no tachos ?
Was he only going from farm to farm ?

If that is meat and not meal, he would be on domestic hours.

It is complicated this exempt lark, but I expect it was as below, taken from Gov.uk
" vehicles that are used to carry animal waste or carcasses that are not intended for human consumption"
Even Vosa have a problem understanding them

Only been off a day. Have I missed something?

Yes, we’re out of scope if (and only if) we’re doing farm collections and are on GB domestic rules and paper log-books. Any reload tanks / bulkers, are in-scope. Of course, if you end up sticking the card in for whatever reason (on a reload/bulker for example, or if going over your hours), you’re stuck on EU regs for at least a week.

Frankly, if I need to go over 11 hours duty time… I’ll be calling for a relief driver and buggering off home. ■■■■ doing 15 hour days !

Little bit more to it than that actually. It affected me in 2012 as I’m on animal feeds deliveries; basically it meant that the daily and weekly driving limits were suspended, though the requirement for a minimum nine hours daily rest remained as did the requirement for 45 minutes break after 4 1/2 hours driving. The derogation was introduced for about 9 days initially then IIRC extended for another week.

It affected deliveries of bulk fuels for heating, animal feedstuffs to farms (but not raw materials to mills) and various others, sorry I can’t remember the exact details. I do remember that we had to do a printout and note the reasons on the back; also it didn’t stop our tacho analysis system from flagging up a shedful of infringements!

All too easy to say stuff 'em BTW, animals got to eat same as we have and whilst farmers do stock up on cake prior to bad weather the bins can only hold so much.

Well according to some met office bod on the radio yesterday we’re apparently in for a mild winter. It’ll be wet and a bit breezy but as its expected that much of the wind will be from the south/west its going to be quite warm.

Can only hope so!
