IT'S 50. 50. 50.

Let’s get it clear.

Yes we know the speed limits in England and Wales has gone up.

Some drivers and company’s are quite happy to reach the dizzy heights of no longer having the chap with the red flag infront.

Some others are quite happy plodding at the old limit.

Oh see that word limit yes it’s a CHUFFIN LIMIT NOT A TARGET.

Please get over the fact some people and company’s may not want to rush around like headless chickens.

Get over it.
It’s no different to one driver wanting to max out his hours every day to the driver that just wants to do his 8 or 9.

I dunno
My bacon sarnies come out right

Many years ago when I was first taught to drive my instructor said to drive to the speed limit if conditions were appropriate. Surely driving deliberately 20% or more below the speed limit is not “making normal progress” and would result in a fail on test? Anyone driving in a manner that would fail a driving test should not be driving anything!

Your driving instructor was obviously an old, incompetent and moth-eaten idiot.

When I was learning in the early 80’s my instructor was always on about making progress go go go etc ,on the day of the test my examiner mentioned I had a lovely drive until I hit the centre of town,i still passed but ,explained hat my instructor was always at me to drive as I did on test …

As previously said it is a limit not a target …I bet those who see it as a target will slow down for bends ,which goes against their it’s a target attitude, why slow down for a bend after all the same speed limit applies …No they will slow down because isn’t safe to attack some bends at the roads speed limit, just as it isn’t always safe to drive on the straight at the speed limit .ie narrow lanes

Your instructor should of taught you to ease off BEFORE the bend and accelerate out of it! :grimacing: and that has been around before the Highway Code got written! :grimacing: you used to whip the horse coming out of the bend and give him two extra monkey nuts for making the timed delivery when the Romans were finishing the A5 off at betsy coed :grimacing:

Mine taught me to use the brakes, obviously more competent than both you and your instructor :stuck_out_tongue:

I once had a rather unfortunate accident once where I was facing downhill and forgot to put my handbrake on. I also forgot to check the parking brake and you guessed it, £13.500 damage.

It was that accident which prompted me to actually get an HGV licence. Until then, I thought the red plunger was an emergency stop button that needed to be swiftly pushed inwards should a roll-away situation arise.

Exactly how I was taught in the mid 70’s, “keep as close to the limit as possible without exceeding it otherwise you will cause tailbacks and give lorry drivers a bad name” was my instructor’s advice. The blooming old Foden only did 42 mph flatout anyway! On my test in Scarborough I hesitated at a T junction to let a car go past on the main road, who then slowed down! :unamused: The examiner chided me for not pulling out before as, in his opinion, I could have beaten the car anyway and it wouldn’t be holding us up now! He kept on at me about “making progress” but he still passed me though.

Pete.

And the wise words are conditions. Not what someone else pushes you to do.
Only the driver in charge knows what and how is load will react

Thing is shag,if the road is decent,I don’t see running at 50 any more stressful or chicken like than running at 40.
The good thing now is of course, those who want to continue to run at 40 will of course pull over and let others by.

i remember on my bike test…i was dawdling along on the a38,when the senior examiner whooshed past.“come on, what are you doing back there”(intercom)
“make progress when you can make progress”

+1.
Make progress not doddle. The powers that be decided to make us do 56 or 52. Let them see the consequences.
How about a overtake button just like F1.

Tell that to the car driver who was doing 42 on the M9 today for no obvious reason :imp:
