Italian speed limits

I spoke to a traffic cop in Italy, and asked why the motorway speed limit for hgv`s at 80 kmh is rarely enforced,if i stick to 80 kmh,all trucks pass me at much more than 80 kmh, even when the police pass, the trucks dont slow down,it is the same on the slower national roads, fast trucks again,he told me the wagons have hidden switchs that show 80 kmh on the tacho, but the “true” speed is much higher, the police know about it,so it seems it is time consuming to find the “switch”,and if they cant find it,the haulage boss will claim demurage.

TOBY, mate they stopped a wagon down in BAVARIA
and along with the Bavarian cops there was some
from Italy as well, by they way a ITALIAN wagon
was stopped checked and escorted to a workshops
where the complete system as regards the digi-tacho
and the speed limiter where 100% renewed,
So that driver and his firm along with that bill
are being invited to visit the courts as its a
criminal offence in GERMANY ,

Blimey,in the 1990`s,Portuguese owner drivers fitted coach differentials to the rear axles of their trucks, the truck would go at much higher speed, they would make the tacho speed to be legal, but real speed was quicker, the drawback was if the Gendarmarie caught them with a radar, they would use a garage off the motorway at Poitiers, and when going past,i would see a queue of trucks waiting to be tested at the owners expense. And large fines,or maybe a custodial sentence would ensue.

Use to be little place in Irun that would do this to any truck apart from an Actros
tacho record 89kmphh but infact doing 95 to 100 what ever was set at . Or so i was told Then garage got found out and closed down

Was alright to start with but as said French was on look at and if you were doing abit then better off having it back down to 90 k’s so didnt stand out

Speed limits in France on nationals 60 k’s but never had a problem well analouge days doing 80 to 90k’s as long as they could see you slowed down to 50 for the villages then never was a problem

Even couple years ago was doing bit extra speed near albacete one night 2 spaniards 1 magnum and v8 scania came past me as i was sat still i put it up to 110k and they still out pulling dropped it back after

When going from Alicante.(loading shoes from Trevomar.),did you go inland to Valencia,or take the coast route,it worked out the same time wise and same distance, the inland route was popular with the Spanish drivers, not many Guardia Civils around, especialy at night too.You come out by the big prison near Valencia.

How would having a coach diff affect the speed reading on a tacho
The speedo would run off the gearbox.
What did they do when the truck went in for tacho calibration . . put the original diff back in?
Sounds like a lot of faffin about to gain a few extra kph.

Toby dont do shoes always had a fridge but personally i dont take the ap7 round past benidorm more tolls and i thnk is bit longer
but that my personal preference always save the tolls where i can as comes out my pocket and enough free motoways in Spain to not use them

But back in the old days load Murcia everyone was up over madrid
now so much quicker back to Valencia and up over teruel now the a23 finished cut across ricla and pamplona down n121a brilliant road now that finished
Only toll i pay is the ap15 to km56 then off into pamplona for fuel and miss the gits on that weighbridge
Or if heavy upto to Zaragoza and a68 to tudela not the ap as free misses 2 weighbridges on the ricla road

Red caps always at first toll by Pamplona, then there is the Navara cops, with vans that look like fire engines.

When we were doing multi drops out there (late 90’s) our last drop was often either Elche (slipper soles) or Alicante (Qimidroga, chemicals) and always went and came back the inland route, the tolls needed avoiding and there was a nice restaurant at the Albacete/Alicante split.

Re-load Valencia then Teruel, Carinena, Ricla, Fuendejalon, Tudela, Sunbila etc.

Didn’t need to mess around with coach diffs in an early 90s Scania, who remembers the old trick with the thumb to keep the needle on the tacho pointing wherever you wanted it too?

I went up that Teruel road a couple of years ago, blimey, that’s changed a bit, it was a dirt road the first time I used it

Do you remember the hanging ‘hams’ curing on the racks on the roadside at Daroca??

Ross.

I vaguely remember, but it was always dark when I went up there, after revision at Sagunto, which meant a stack of empty pallets down the middle of the trailer, two pallets of oranges on the arse, papers stamped, back to the pack house for the rest of the load & then big licks north, early morning coffee in Castets, dinner in Vivonne and breakfast in Pompey

Having a coach dif wouldn’t affect the speed reading on a tacho, because the speedo runs off the gear box.
So, for 90kmh with a stock truck dif your prop shaft spins at, for arguments sake, 500 rpm.
Change the gearing after your gear box by changing to a coach dif and for an actual road speed of 90 kmh your prop shaft is only spinning at say 450 rpm, but to get a speedo reading of 90 kmh your propshaft still has to spin at 500 rpm. It could increase your speed by a fair bit.
Don’t forget, this was NOT the UK, OR that recent Little out of the way workshops could almost certainly be persuaded to ‘turn a blind eye’ when it came to calibration checks.I dunno if they would still be so willing.
