Italian Customs at Ponte Chiasso have announced strike action for the 18th and 19th May 2005. On these dates, the Customs post will remain closed between 05.00h and 22.00h.
As the Swiss night time ban for trucks runs from 22:00 until 05:00 this means that nothing will cross that border from 22:00 on Tuesday the 17th until 05:00 on Friday the 20th. There is also a Pulic Holiday in Switzerland on the 16th which means the 17th will be busier than usual, best to avoid Chiasso for the whole week I would think.
This brings back memories on two fronts.
Italian customs strikes at the Blanc forcing great lines of us to wait for days on the A/routes on the French side. Toilet facilities in the tilt . Food via the little van that poddled along the hard shoulder each day
Dutch drivers’ blockade of Como/Chiasso backing many of us into the tunnel. In the days before cab heaters that tunnel was full of exhaust fumes forcing us to walk down to the border. Eventually a Brit working for a German firm got it sorted. The problem was smuggled ■■■■ in flowers . Especially fraught for me as the girl friend was desperate not to waste her Xmas present of tickets to see Johnny Mathis in Nottingham on the Saturday night. We made it - just
Salut, David.
