40p/sq mtr = 4p/sq ft = very unrealistic.More like £40/sq mtr and that`s cheap.
that must make my garage worth about a grand a month

As ‘Up North’ is where they came from in the first place so no great loss then. Even so if they did ove north they would still need drivers based in the south or their networks would fall apart.
Don’t listen to rumours and gossip.
One of the reasons Meachers opened up in Derby back in 1999 was that “you can’t go south from Southampton”… and that was directly from Bob Terris, who was, and still is,their MD!
Derby and Nottingham are fast becoming logical alternatives to Magna Park and Daventry, not least because the latter two are now very expensive areas for staff to live.

Is it not also fair to say that wages are cheaper the further north you go, its certainly the case in the north east

Thay’ve never been up to much in the East Midlands either, andd certainly not in West Wales where I live now; ask any Owens’ driver! Law of supply and demand has a lot to do with it though.
Boss & Driver:
A recruitment consoltent today today told me that a lot of there big firms like stoby and booths are secretly moving there warehousing up north from Daventry to the like of Darby and nottingham
coz the warehousing space is much cheaper up there like 40p/ square meter
I dont think I would read to much into that.
The Stobart group are allegedly into some massive restructuring right now. If anything I would feel that they would be more posed to be opening up more distribution areas in places where they lay a bit shallow.
As part of their restructuring, they are trying to do away with trampers and have trucks running day and night, to maximise earnings from them, they are kinda unlikely to be closing RDC’s and making the delivery distances/targets further away.
Thus; where there is a lot of rumours about Stobarts wanting to buy out Bartrums or CEVA’s in Norfolk. Not because Bartrums or CEVA’s are a superb company and a threat to Stobarts, but because they own a good bit of land and warehousing space.
But thats all drivers talk, nothing linky or news wise to prove those scenario’s folks.
i dont think are going to buy anything next year, just a case of batten down the hatches and see what 2013 brings.

Agree with batten down the hatches. Thus is proved in their actions and stock market value. There is some very knowledgeable folk on the B.O.D in Stobies.
Now I cant speak for all extremities of the UK, but only my local area. Stobies are a tad short of holdings in Norfolk, and to be fair, Norfolk is a time consuming place to get to and from.
This is going to cause them problems with their Colmans and Britvic contract with doing it without trampers. Well that’s unless the Subbies are just going to do Norfolk.
As posted earlier, I’m working on drivers rumours for Bartrums and CVAS, nothing proven to pull to the table.
But if I was a haulier, I would watch what Stobies are up to very closely, as what they lead, sheep begin to follow. So worth getting in early folks, especially as their biggest UK rival is on the ropes and has no where to go right now except bankruptcy or take over (allegedly).

there might well be some knowledgeable folk on the b.o.d,but there far out weighed by some of the idiots in the t.o,s,to really prosper as a company in my experiance you really need your drivers on your side, you dont need to pamper to there every wish, just treat them with a degree of respect, there really is no need too dish out threats with every instruction,a please could you do this would suffice,DO YOU WANT A JOB,THE DOORS THERE IF YOUR NOT HAPPY,PLENTY OF DRIVERS WHOD LOVE YOUR JOB etcetc, ive never seen so many fed up drivers, not just your usual moaners, drivers who say very little,go that extra mile, when they start rebeling youve problems, maybe its there new buisness model, kick ■■■
