Is this the end of tramping as we know it!

Did they get the idea from Roadhawk?

But instead of watching the road, they watch you!! ā– ā–

I wonder if some joker had swivelled the camera around on its mountings?

DHL are very keen on the Roadhawk system - I think it may be their intention to fit them in all their vehicles. But as others have said, they only operate while the ignition switch is ā€˜on’, and, while they record continuously, the output (beginning a few seconds before and ending a few seconds after) is only saved to the memory card if it detects a severe jolt, or if the driver presses the button on the dash.

I’m a London bus driver.

We have had CCTV on the driver all the time for years!

your brave admitting that on here

Not really. Most if not all modern bus fleets in the UK have CCTV on the buses. 1997 I think was the earliest vehicle in National Express and Stagecoach of buses to have them.

Cameras point down either side of the bus, out the front below the sign. Inside at the passengers. Down on top of the driver, another looking from above the drivers head out of the door as well as looking forwards from the middle of the saloon.

He meant admitting to being a ā€˜DING DING’ and o yea a bus is not your home for 4 or more nights on the go

DHL seem like a horrible company to work for, always have to cover everything they do in so much red tape & bs in general, I hope the pay makes up for it all… Anybody work or has worked for DHL particularly the consumer network logistics side of it?

Was speaking to a driver yesterday and he showed me the camera that had just been fitted in his cab pointing at the driver and not the road. This was on a dhl contract but was for howdens joinery and just wondered if this is going to be the norm in a few years. What happens when the wife phones for ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā– ā–  do you just let the office watch :grimacing:

Its for the Injurence Company who can charge you for the Damage if you hadnt both Hand on the Wheel at and before Impact

I used to work for DHL on the Howdens contract out of Runcorn for 12 years and still speak to a few of the drivers. From what I have heard the cameras arent live yet and I believe they are linked to a video phone system, bit like skype. They have tried fitting other systems before when I worked there, trackers and text comunication systems and all we did was switch them off or pull the fuse, after a while the company just forgot we had them. The same will happen with these and IF they are to continually film the driver then I know the drivers will just cover them up.
As for how well paid they are to have to put up with the cameras, when I left 2 years ago we were on £32500 salary for 54 hours a week plus full sick pay and those of us that got tuped over from MFI also got our contribution towards our pension paid for. 26 days holiday plus bank holidays and £28 night out and I know they have had pay rises since. The job was and still is compared to general haulage a piece of p*** but like most people everyone I know that works there winges and moans that the job is hard, trouble is most of them that work there are just chauffers and never really worked in the proper haulage game.
DHL dont operate all the trucks for Howdens, the depots at Northampton and Howden are both still in house transport.

Ok so wouldn’t it be beneficial to the driver’s pocket etc by doing away with all this crap that is never used or forgotten about? Is any of this technology used in a negative way towards the driver ie in disciplinary by DHL?

It will be - if you have done something wrong. Our Fleet Engineer was talking about cameras last time he visited. They are on trial with a view for every vehicle to have them. The main reason for this is the increase in dodgy insurance claims from the criminal fraternity.

Mr B:
Don’t these cameras only record 10 minute on a loop and only save the footage if a harsh manoeuvre is detected?

According to the Roadhawk web site http://www.roadhawk.co.uk/faq/info_10.html the cameras can be fitted with a 16Gb SD card, this will record continually for about 16 hours before it starts to overwrite the initial data.

Oh dear, I wouldn’t like to have a camera recording me, not when I talk to myself, listen to music in foreign languages (you just know they would be itching to ask what it was) seems like a total invasion of privacy to me.

just lay on the bunk and tug one off every nite, they will soon get bored of watching.
or place your lapy infront of the cam and play some gay ā– ā– ā– ā–  for them to watch…

Sounds like a fairly standard evening to me…

Perhaps this explains Berties grumpy demeanor ā– ā– ?

You mean he’s having dinner or is that some kind of euphemism :open_mouth:

If it’s the latter does he have the KFC buckets phone number please

I can see that a camera in teh cab for trampers might be abit off putting when getting changed/dressed etc
Any other time your at work in a company vehicle so dont see why the boss shouldnt monitor you, nearly every other work place had CCTV installed aswell as the boss being able to pop in at any moment and see what your up to so truck driving isnt really much diffrent
Dont think anyone would be that botherd what your up to as long as its legal etc
if you want some privracy while on daily rest just cover camera up and uncover in morning as the cab goes from being a work place to accomodation
