Hiya all im after some advise if possible on two things,
Number 1
Ive been asked by a friend if i would like to do a run from penrith to port tablot and back now i dont think i can do this legal in an 12hr shift.
Number 2
I read about the WTD but i cant get my head around it i work 34 hour as a plumber through the week so how many hours could i drive in a month? i thought i could do a 12hr shift one week then a week off then 12hrs the week after and so on is this right? Does it really matter ?
You don’t say but I assume you are talking about a truck coming ubnder EU Drive’s Hours Regulations for these questions

Not sure where you are getting a 12 hour shift from, the maximum shift possible is 15 hours. Regardless of that you couldn’t do this return journey in a shift as I suspect it is somewhere around 1000 kilometres and that isn’t possible in a 10 hour driving day, the maximum driving hours allowed in a shift. The best I’ve ever done in a 10 hour day is a little over 860 kilometres and that was spending the entire 10 hours on traffic free toll roads in France, not the M5 and M6.

It’s not a question of how many hours you can drive in a month but how often you can do a driving shift
The 34 hours you work as a plumber have no bearing on the WTD for mobile workers, they don’t count so you will not come close to exceeding the 48 hour averages or 60 hour maximum weekly limits for that.
Those hours do however count toward the tacho regulations, as other work. In a week where you do any driving at all under EU regulations you will need to observe a weekly rest period, and a daily rest period on any day(s) you actually drive. You also need to complete a tacho chart for your plumbing days in those weeks showing your name, the date, start and finish times.
It does depend on your start finish times as a plumber and the times for the proposed driving shifts but as a rule of thumb you can do one shift a fortnight as a driver and stay legal. One a week may be possible but it does depend very much on your plumbers hours.
If you can give some details of your hours I can give a better answer.
Cheers Coffeeholic i thought the port tablot was a defo no go. I work a five days week i start at 8 and finish at 4(16:00) (7 hours) mon - thurs then 8 till 3.30 friday (6.5 hours) with an hour for breaks = 34.5 hours over 5 days.
There is some driving done through the day so does this count?, I then do call out once a month for a week so the driving would be a no go that week. As it is friday - friday. So how many days/ shifts is it possilbe to do ?
Any driving done in a vehicle under 3.5 tonnes is counted as OTHER WORK
The best thing you could do is to show what you INTEND to do as an EXEMPLE like this -
It will allow the expert(s) to tell you whether it is legal or not BEFORE you do it

Right, as said before forget about the WTD for mobile workers, it isn’t going to be an issue for you

Tacho rules area different matter. I presume the driving you mention during the week doesn’t come under tacho rules so all your 34.5 hours will just be ‘other work’ in a week in which you drive under tacho rules.
I’ll ignore the call out week as you have said no driving can be done during that time.
For the other weeks you can do one shift a fortnight with no problem and with careful planning you could do one a week. Somewhere between 15:30 Friday and 08:00 Monday you will have to have an uninterrupted period of at least 24 hours so that is the first consideration when deciding when you can work. You also couldn’t really start a driving shift before 00:30 Saturday, 9 hours after you finish on Friday. If you did start earlier than this the plumbing hours would count toward that shift meaning you would have to be finished by 23:00 Friday, 15 hours after you started work Friday morning. You cannot do a driving shift which finishes later than 23:00 Sunday, leaving 9 hours before you resume your plumbing job on Monday.
The easiest way is to fit the weekly rest period in straight after finishing work Friday, meaning not driving work before 15:30 Saturday or before resuming work Monday, no driving work later then 08:00 Sunday. One shift every second week on Saturday or Sunday built around those rest periods will easily keep you legal.
You could do a shift every week. Either on a Sunday, as long as you didn’t start before 12:30, 45 hours after finishing work Friday and be finished by 23:00 latest, or by starting no earlier than 00:30 and finishing by 11:00 Saturday, 45 hours before resuming work on Monday.

Not legal. You had a reduced weekly rest last week therefore need a regular period this week, at least 45 hours. You are only having 38.5 hours. You cannot do that driving this weekend based on what you did last. You could do a shift between 12:30 and 23:00 Sunday, that would give you the required 45 hours between 15:30 Friday and 12:30 Sunday.

MON - thurs 0800 to 1600 Plumbing
FRI - 0800 to 1530 Plumbing
SAT - off
No driving done so this can be ignored for the tacho rules.
Aky31:
Is it possible to work sat and sun day then have the next weekend off ?
Only if you can do 2 shifts with at least 9 hours between them and an uninterrupted period of 24 hours in between 13:30 Friday and 08:00 Monday, and making sure you have at least 9 hours before resuming work Monday - it could be part of the 24-hour period. Realistically it’s not possible to work both the Saturday and the Sunday after doing 5 days plumbing work…
