Ah but how safe is your job…

work for eddie so no problems there , job for life really

If theres one thing ive learnt working for stobart… dont put yourself in a position to be shot down in flames.
Believe me i dont want to be out of a job but larger fims than stobart have gone down the pan before and will again.

I don’t mean to sound alarmist but…we are in unchartered waters. You mention bigger firms than Stobbart…if you remember back a couple of months…the US goverment had to bail out banks which would make stobbarts look very small indeed.

is the recession this bad?.in a word yes.just ask 30 of my collegues who have just been paid off, they will tend to agree.on the plus side our lass has just made a nice cornbeef pie.

you may be ok in yuor bit of the Stobby empire
tell me this why is Wincanton looking for drivers on Magna Pk
giving a reply address of Britvic
i thought that was an Eddie job

although woolworths may be a last minute reprieve…the logistics that deliver to them would make more drivers redundant.Ang if there are less drivers around when things fianlly do pick up then it will be the case of all drivers chasing the same jobs

Which would mean too many drivers about hopefully with onoone coming in to the industry as its flooded drivers finding other jobs .

Sounds like thet last driver shortage that didnt exist might happen again?.

i know people are loosing there jobs ,but, looking in the estate agents window today theres a bungalow reduced from 129,950 to 79,950 for quick sale , big drop , not that far off of 50 %.
if your a young driver in a job thinks arnt looking so bad, not long ago we couldnt afford houses on our wages , now its looking alot rosier

I assume you’re a cash buyer? New mortgage business is down 57% year on year.
Lloyds TSB alone have turned down 33% of all mortgage applications.

And it’s predicted to get worse next year. :open_mouth:

sarcasim,as i cant think of any positive points to people losing their jobs,in case you were wondring or a little confused. :unamused:  :unamused: :unamused:

I drive for a company that is run by Maersk which is probably one of the biggest firms in transport (be it sea/road),
(based on assets/turnover/market share etc), they could buy Stobarts to use as a playset for one of the directors son’s but even they are feeling the crunch so I really dont think anyone is safe in this at all. They are supposed to have 12 container ships just stood down, and alledgedly one of the recent dockings at Felixstowe only had 70 containers on, we can shift those in one night and thats just our firm let alone all the others working out of the docks.

Our yard is next to Aarslef piling and Tarmac in Newark Tarmac dont seem to be sat doing nothing ALTHOUGH they dont seem to be as busy either I would have thought they would only use their own owner drivers but no the case theres a constant supply of their own trucks and other in and out of the place daily.

Aarslef also seem to have a few in and out daily and liek above although not under pressure they seem to be having stuff moving.

But like you say the New Year will be the test althoguh the building industry always has been quite seasonal we have to wait and see our yard is under staffed which I just hope will prevent anyone being laid off in the new year.

most of the od’s there are on one load a day recently, parked up for lunch etc,mr entwistle’s turn up there after god knows how many empty miles running to wait 3-4hrs for a job…not good,me dad’s been there near on 40yrs (24 as an od)he’s loving it now…wagon/trailer all paid and no morgage etc,he keeps telling me “we made it throgh last recession, this is no different”,it’s hard to argue…

My son bought a 4 bedroom house with land on Ebay, when he went to see the house, it was furnished, linen on the beds, and food in the cupboards, there was a car in the garage (included in the sale). He paid the equivalent of £800 for it, it’s in New York state. This is about whats he pays in monthly rent for his flat here in the UK. Fortunately his job in IT takes him over the pond several times a year. Goes to show how much worse the US economy is compared to the UK, will property prices in the UK slump to this level? who knows? Goes to show, no matter how cheap property is, you need cash because nobody’s going to give you a mortgage. I cant say I was pleased for him, that was somebodys home, somebodys pride and joy, so what happened to them? I am saddened by the way things are going :frowning:

Not sure if you are aware of how many drivers have been actually made redundant by Stobarts and how many depots have closed down over the years
