really nothing to do with you if the companay employs him then let him get on with the job he would have been trained to do it most shunters dont have a hgv licence
it is if hes not covered by insurance, which is what i said ,is he
He will be, just not the same type of insurance you have when driving your truck as his vehicle wonāt need it if it doesnāt go on the highway.
My son has driven my 2.5 tonne 4x4 , he doesnt have a licence, and is not insured, in fact he is only 6 years old, one of the onlookers is one of my neighbours whose job happens to be pretty high up in my local area Police traffic department.
I think if by letting my son (albeit with me having the opportunity to take control of the vehicle at any time) drive the Land Rover on private land with the owners permission she felt an offence was being committed I doubt wether she would have stood by and ignored it. More than her jobs worth !!
Off Public highways you dont need a licence/insurance or MOT- the only thing you should have is public liability insurance.
dont have a cow man, if you get wiped out your missus will get wongad up by the insurance company.
just make sure she aint standing in with the truck wash kid

The kid is doing no-one out of a job
theres always been a shunter and a truck washer, now hes going to do both told me the other day hed offered to do the shunting for 3k less than what the shunter gets now[he said shunters on 27k],so i guess now hell be washing the trucks, shunting for 3 k less than what a shunter gets,no wonder the companys all for it ,but im not bothered about that,im more bothered if he runs me/anyone else over, you say, coffee say hes insured, thats good enough for me,you say its legal, coffee does so again thats good enough for me.
just doesnt seem right to me,not allowed to drive on road[train]but fine round private yard
Ady, you are covered by the liability insurance of the yard owner - obviously. If he is on official business, then he is covered on liability insurance.
If you are too dumb to stay out of his way, thatās your lookout. Do you read the Mail, by any chance?
theres also a memo on board saying theyve now tasked him with checking interiors of trucks when they come back in to make sure there left clean and tidy,no ā ā ā ash, rubbish, coffee stains etc,so now hes going to be washing the trucks, shunting them, checking them for cleaness , all for Ā£3 k less than the shunter[ex shunter got] ,after doing all that lot i cant see hell be in a fit state to drive, probally fall asleep at the wheel
as for leaving him to get on with it,i think someone needs to have a word with him, talk about cutting the job up
In fact, its people like you that are making this job such a joy these days. Hardly a week goes by without some H+S pleb poking their nose into things just to justify their job, why canāt you just let the bloke earn his dough? Most of the posters on here have got it bang on, if you canāt keep out of the way of an artic in the yard, then maybe its you thats the problem.
And as for all this, āIād like to be a grandfatherā etc, so would I, but thereās more chance of me dying of high blood pressure from reading posts like this than there is of getting flattened by a lorry reversing round the yard.

i also dont see why some truck washer should be allowed to put my life,my girls future on the line either,
id be intrested on your thoughts
FAMILY MAN,RUN OVER BY UNLICENSED DRIVER
what part of he does not need a licence on private land can you not understand ā ā ?
heĆĀ“s not doing you out of a job is he ?
he probably got told take it or leave it so having at least half a brain he took it fair play to him jobs are not easy to come by.
Obviously the job does not require a licensed driver so why shoul they employ one ?
Our truckwasher moves all kind of vehicles every day from artics to drawbars the young lad can reverse better than 90% of the so called professionals
i do,because if i or anyone gets injured i believe they should get what there entitled to,
Itās beginning to sound like you want to get run over, so you will be able to complain about him not having a not required licence and if you donāt get a pay out you can say I told you so.
Letās hope he nails you next time youāre in there so we donāt have to wait too long to find out what happens. The drama and suspense is too much.
Just on a normal work day you will encounter far more unlicensed drivers than just meeting this bloke, who isnāt actually unlicensed, whenever you are in that yard. Some estimates put the number of unlicensed drivers on UK roads at well over the 1,000,000 mark and while this bloke will be covered by insurance they wonāt be. It is around 1 in 20 drivers who are not licensed so next time you are in a traffic jam count 40 vehicles and the chances are you will be that close to 2 unlicensed drivers and there is a far higher chance of you having an accident with one of them, and at greater speed, that with this blokeā¦
So again, if this is a major concern of yours you really have to give up using the roads otherwise you might not make it to Grandfather.

Calm down dear, go and put your hi-viz on

+2 why dont you worry about your own job an earning your own money, instead of worryin about wa he is doing ā ā
end of the day your company no he hasnt got a license and on private land he doesnt need 1 as said in previous posts, the company has insurance as a whole so whats the big problem ? your insured and so is the other guy along with the rest of the employees so stop cryin over something that is goin to be a rare thing in a yard, lets be honest he isnt goin to be sat on the limiter is he ? if you cant move away from a moving truck then you need help
Trev_H:
Is this just sour grapes, is it looking like heāll make a better driver than yourself?
well if he is spending so much time worrying about what someone else is doing instead of concentrating on his own job this could always be a possibility
Good luck to the lad, in a few years we may well be arguing on here about whether we want to drive for HIS company or not, there might even be a tv series!
I have seen plenty of videos on YouTube of kids manoeuvring trucks. One lad couldnāt even sit down but managed to reverse a 44t artic into a narrow space better than Iāve seen some professional drivers do it!
The children clearly donāt have drivers licences but they still do it. It probably started out with supervision as most learn but soon moved to not needing that as they got on with it.
If you are unsure of the yard drivers driving skills the either speak to a manager or just try and stay out of his way. Go āby the bookā and make sure that manoeuvring vehicles can see you before you walk around them and all that stuff. You know, try and stay alive
