As usual just another a tragic accident, I just find it odd that he drove off, not stopping after the incident. Then appears to know about it as he states he must have been dazzled by oncoming traffic so he knew when & where it took place, then he pleads guilty to an offence of careless driving. Surely if he didn’t know anything about the incident he would plead not guilty.
For the record I think the sentence is a joke, in fact it’s barely a sentence.

Did the lorry driver KNOW he had hit the cyclist ? - that does not seem to be clear in the media unless I missed it
It’s perfectly feasible to knock a cyclist off and not be aware of it, more so in towns rather than on the open road. This happened in the early hours which makes me wonder if this was another tired driver working to stupid company imposed shift patterns, that wasn’t even aware of the cyclist?
Of course he knew when it where it took place - the Police questioned him about it afterwards!

I would think only the driver would truly know if he hit someone, you would have to be pretty hard hearted not to stop though, unless he had, what he thought, was a good reason. But regardless he didn’t stop & had to be tracked down. If it could be proven that he had known what could he have been charged with?
Possable he recalls seeing the cyclist but not hitting him and thought he had cleared him was dazzled hit cyclist but not aware and carried on thats how you could intergpret the poor reportin
