Hi, just been looking for a pic of an old 141 operated by Amtrak which I believe was an owner driver from manchester but I may be wrong? ( black and red 4x2 unit). Could’ve sworn I’d stumbled across it on eurowheels but can’t find it anywhere now!
Anyway I’ve just found this: is this chris hoppers old transcontinental ? I’m not sure when or where this picture was taken but thought it may be of interest on here.
Don’t know if he ever owned the first Transconti, the bull bar looks like it was one from the tank farm where Chris got his. If your thinking of the high roof conversion he had it’s registration was TDL 624X and was sold to a bloke in Doha or somewhere down that way. The other trucks are Pat Duffies 140, I know that as it says it quite clearly on it. And a few other trucks are American, as well as another Scania.
Here’s a pic of VKN 45 X. LHD !! when it was new back in 1982 chap on the left is the owner Tim working for TAE/Eurpopa out of Erith doing Italy every week.
I did manage to find the image I was looking for its in the link in the first post now too.
There was an old 141 in drools den manchester near my mum and dads house. It was a bit of a wreck, faded purple and white paint I recall. But within a short time it was transformed into a real nicer truck, and was in the Amtrak colours like in your picture.
I wasn’t sure if it was an owner driver or if they had a fleet?

Hi and thanks for this pic. What a beast! It looks huge there! How come they were so tall competed to their Renault and Berliet counterparts?
Just spotted the black script beneath the windscreen, “second attempt” that does ring a bell with me now,
I was chatting with a chap on here a while ago called tony smith who ran a lovely Dutch spec 141.
I think he knows the chap who owned this Amtrak scanny, he would know I think!

Hi Richmond
Ron Grithiths stopped trading quite a few years ago.
The main reason for the start of the decline was when Sony moved production from Bridgend to Poland (I think), this was the mainstay of his work when that had gone he had to look elsewhere.
He also bought 6 RHD Daf 6X2 units which pushed us down the pecking order for work and due to natural wastage of my elderly drivers and others leaving I sold all of my units to Barry Barnes for sellers. I then concentrated on our lowloader business.
The final nail in the coffin for STS was when they had a fire in the warehouse, something in a groupage consignment I believe! Ron then decided to finish, he eventually sold everything, although due to the economic climate at that time it took a very long time to sell his warehouse and land at Nursling. I have since had a meal with Ron (a true gentleman) and a year after he closed down he was still employing his accountant to settle the complex GIT claims and other financial matters . Everyone got paid and Southern Transport Services did not go broke.
Yes thats good i remember him as firm but fair, i used to do two a week to sony barcelona back was a good job that but it seemed to die off and away i went onto other things, expect that fell nice for barry though !glad it all ended well and if you see ron give him my regrds , used to see a lot of your trucks on for him then aswell and mr comptons
