Is this a good deal

Hi

I,ve just been offered full time employment after doing 4 months on agency with a company. Like all jobs there are pros and cons and all drivers like to have a good moan. The offer is to drive a 7.5 tonne lorry with a trailer delivering cars throughout the UK one of the biggest cons is the truck itself a Isuzu 75 with a pod on the roof a pile of junk that you feel like you have been beaten up after 12 hours working. the wages are £440.00 plus £70.00 bonus a week plus night out £100 per week and £20 a week meal allowance all parking is paid so all ways park where you get a good meal voucher . Work long hours monday to thursday so as to finish early on friday can be back at home by 10am or as late as 5pm if things go ■■■■ during the week. No weekend work and 31 days holiday. is this good or bad and would you put up with crap kit if the money was right also good transport manager and planner only called once a day. Can you earn a lot more in a class 2 or 1

Your first mistake is calling a 7.5 tonner a lorry

I know it is a 7.5 tonner but that is to do with weight only as it is longer than most ridged lorry s but shorter than a class 1 in most cases i wanted to know if it was a good deal as some drivers are on great money and some on ■■■■■ for driving a class 2 or 1. The way people are paid in the industry is all over the place :frowning:

although you cannot choose your vehicle the second mistake is driving an Isuzu [piece of crap]as you stated,i would turn a job down if it meant driving one of them

I understand that it is JUNK but i may retake my class 2 test next month to go on a 5 car which are DAFS could wait a bit longer as company pay for training but only have a limited amount of time left before having to sit my thorys again. and it pays the bills.

Only you can decide if it’s good or not.

Are you happy with the pay for the work required? Can you overlook driving a rattlebox and still work towards getting your class 2? There are class one drivers doing max hours and earning the same or less.

Play the long game and if it helps get you to where you want to be then crack on driver

The £440 is i suspect the only guaranteed part of that package, are you OK with that when on holiday…this is PAYE isn’t it.
Is the 31 days hols including bank hols, do you have to work bank hols, does the bonus/meal money/night out pay get percentaged down on short weeks eg bank hol weeks.
You’ll most likely do lots of late Friday finishes and very few early ones.

Can you load over the trailer onto the prime mover or do you have to disconnect the poxy thing each time to access it?

Good point is that a multi drop is only going to be a max of three, assuming the prime mover carries two, same with collections.
Another good point is that if you get your class 1 (assuming you don’t already have one) is that this experience will stand you in good stead, and you might make the right contacts whilst there, to move onto far more lucrative 11 car transporters in due course.

The make and top of the lorry is of no consequence, its what you stuff in your hip pocket what counts, and there might be one or two perks of the job that help which we won’t mention but you’ll learn soon enough.

What licence do you currently have ?as I thought you could only drive a 7.5 tonne with a trailer under 750 kg on a car licence . (That’s if you had grandfather rights )
Or have I missed something ?

Do you think it’s a good deal? That’s all that matters when all said & done, not the opinions of anyone on here, some of whom would sell their mothers for a job like that, although they wouldn’t admit it, while others wouldn’t get out of bed for anything less than a shiney new vehicle.

How do the wages compare to being on Agency, ask yourself are you going to be better off.
As for the vehicle can we assume its the same vehicle you have been driving for the last four months full time on Agency,if it is what`s the difference of driving it on Agency as to being employed permanent on the same vehicle
Only you can decide on what going to be beneficial

Yes it is PAYE company make holiday pay 31 days as you have to take 3 says off at crimbo yes bank holidays are in 31 days as well. bonus paid on holidays average not nights out or meal allowance. Been there 16 weeks only had 2 maybe 3 late finishes on a Friday. yes always load over trailer with bridging ramps deliver about 3 cars a day only carry 2 cars at any given time. And company do train drivers onto class 1 if you want to do it as they run 5 car and 11 car transporters

Yes your right my thoughts are it is a good deal but i base that on all the moaning from drivers in the truckstops e.t.c about poor pay. And i dont have a class 2 never mind class 1

Rip their arm off mate, don’t worry a bloody minute about the present lorry, if they’re prepared to put you through HGV go with it, if they make you sign up for a reasonable period to pay it back no matter, do it, when you’ve got two years good 11 car transporting under your belt you can go anywhere in transporter world…if you want to go that is, company you’re at don’t sound too bad to me to be honest.
You no doubt already know there’s already a massive shortage of skilled ■■■■■■ :smiling_imp: drivers and there’s going to a bloody desperate shortage in 5 years time as the already ageing crew retire, you’re made mate…

PS…moaning lorry drivers, Jesus wept i’ve worked with, still do, some ponces who if you paid 'em a grand a week to lie in bed would still winge about it, let the ■■■■■■■■ they talk go in one ear and out the other bugger.

Sounds a decent little number, especially if you’re likely to get class 1 out of it.

Only YOU can decide if it’s right for you though as others have said. The experience will be good though, while you build up to larger vehicles. I’m assuming you’re wanting to get onto 11 car transporters at some point? If so, and this company is willing to get you there, then go for it. You’re obviously happy enough working there.

Pretty sure you need a class 1 to drive that set up with trailer, as with reasonable size motors on you will be over the 107 restriction of 8250kg.

Some firms will use a lighter unit- a 5.5t or 6t etc have it built light & light trailer & some then down plate the unit to 8250kg train (I’m not convinced they need to do that) then regular non c1 drivers
Can drive it & have a fair payload, yours have that? I know a izuzu 7.5t is light vs a Euro 7.5t but a push with 2 cars & a trailer to be sub 8250?

Lorry down graded to 5.5t Have to reverse cars on to lorry so as to not be over weight on axle only carry 1 car on lorry and 1 car on trailer

If you are happy with it then go for it don’t matter what anyone thinks of it as you said it pays the bills & if you don’t take it someone else will you can then work way up to CE & 11 cars could be right for you

The transport manager will only train current drivers and not take on out side of the business so all current drivers in all classes have done there time in the small trucks. Quite keen to get on 5 car more space to live in 4 days of the week and still easy to load and get better bonus upto £260 a week if it all falls right same basic e.t.c. And bigger ones tell me that is the best one to be on alround. Have looked into doing class 2 myself today and could do my test on the 23 rd October 1 days training then a test all in £600 company have 2 new DAF 5 cars coming January

Seem like they like to promote within the company if you like it I would stay & go for it as you will get you turn in time

I’d say go for it. Yes it may be a heap of junk you’ll be driving but it won’t be forever and the only reason most of us go to work is for the money which sounds pretty good.
