I have not been in a truck for 20 years. I also have no experience of Taut liners, chains, tippers etc. My big worry is that someone gives me a star and I go to pick the truck up and don’t know what to do? My brother had a load of steel to do for an agency last week and he knew how the chains go and how to tighten them etc. This might be an experience thing but what about the cabs, is there a refresher course I could do where they put you in the most common types scania, man, Volvo etc?
All you can do is to ask those doing the job and learn from them
If such a comprehensive course did exist then it would likely be super expensive !!
Refresher courses can be done to tighten up on your driving. Most schools have a 4h session for this purpose.
As for load restraint etc, I have never known a course. Mostly common sense.
If its heavy its gonna need chains with a tensioner.
Most things can be restrained with a ratchet and straps.
You can never over restrain something. Cutting corners is a sure way of getting it wrong.
I have done roping and sheeting and I have used ratchet straps etc. Think I will be OK I have looked at the videos on how to use a Digitacho so that should be ok and I have loads of experience using the old fashioned analogue type. I am comfortable with gear boxes used splitters and rangers before. I am going to do my class 1 (C+E) with Tockwith so should be OK but will probably need o do some class 2 first for financial reasons
When you’re at Tockwith ask them for 5 minutes on the load restraint trolley. This will at least cover the basic use of chains, load-lock bar and ratchet strap.
Apart from that, as Rog said, most learning takes place “on the job”.
All the best with it, Pete

Thanks Pete, I am probably going to go with Viamaster as there are a few freebies like the first aid which I hear is good and the course prices are cheaper, equipment good etc. I will ask them when I go if I can cover the basic use of chains, load-lock bar and ratchet strap.
cheers
If you are based up in Yorkshire area try using L&T transport Fitzwilliam. I phoned viamaster and they said they were out on the road and would phone me back, they never did. I spoke to tockwith and they overcharge in my opinion telling me I needed a minimum of 16-20 hours. I went to L&T who I’d used for my class 2. I had 2 half days (Saturday, Sunday) test Monday morning and passed first time with a total of 10 hours training

Did my class 1 last year with L&T. Got me thru 1st time. As above, they were happy for me to train over the weekend.
Would def recommend them

Thank you, yes I am between Leeds and Bradford. I will give them a call. Still waiting for my licence to come back at the moment, had my medical last Wednesday so it has been just over a week. When it does come I am going to go for C+E, CPC, Hiab and I want to do moffett but can’t find anyone who does that.
