I sincerely feel for him. I guess I could be in the same position if circumstances were different. But what you’ve inadvertently touched on is a definite change in mind-set in many employers. Time was when your brother in law could have gone almost anywhere and dictated his own terms. But now, such people are perceived as stuck in the mud dinasours and new drivers are seen as a breath of fresh air. Some very experienced drivers demonstrate real attitude problems (often justified through years of abuse) which are not evident with new drivers.

I have recently completed a large training programme for a bus company that will not employ experienced drivers. That is evidence that I can quote 1st hand.

I am well aware that many ads quote the 2yr experience. I also know for a certain fact that new drivers who go for those jobs sometimes get a start. Clearly, this isn’t always going to be the case.

I’m not trying to be contreversial with this post and hope I’ve presented a balanced view. Like I said, I’m actually on the wrong side of this myself!

That is not describing my BIL because he likes to turn his hand to anything that pays

He is also a qualified Forklift instructor along with many other strings to his bow

So he is falling victim to the “no experienced drivers” thing that seems to be catching on. And I’m certainly not suggesting that all experienced drivers have got bad attitudes. But I believe that if I (also with 40 years experience) were to go for a driving job, I would face predjudice. That was my only point.
