Is it okay to be crap if you are an agency driver?

Many (all ?) trucks have a switch to turn off the reverse bleeper.
If the cab curtains are closed assume they’re sleeping.

No idea where it is or what it looks like. Remember from theory you have to turn them off within certain hours on 30 limit streets.

In fact there are loads of buttons that I have no idea about. I pressed one that came up with percentages and seemed to adjust the suspension. I will start asking other drivers and learning all these buttons. Because I really don’t have any ideas.

No Sammy you turn it off between the hours off 11:30 pm and 7 am…

sammym:
I’ll make sure it’s strapped in future. The problem with asking is… None of the other drivers used straps. I was watching the older more experienced guys hoping to copy.

They didn’t at the pallet network depot my lad started driving at for his first drop. I told him to ignore them and strap it all down because he’d be the one getting the fines. He did and because he never had any pallets go over or damage any of the load as a result he got moved up to artics and doing long distance work within a few months of starting as soon as a job came up even though he’d only passed his test a few months earlier and there were screwdrivers working there with far many more years under their belts. He said that after a few days of strapping the load down the forkies actually even used to come and help him.

As for the forkies where you are not telling you, it isn’t their job to make sure you secure your load and they’ve probably given up telling drivers after being told to mind their own business.

That’s good then. I was practicing my reversing before 11.30 so the grumpy git had no right to complain. He wasn’t even sleeping - just sitting in his passenger seat on his phone.

Jokes aside - it seemed smart to practice a bit when I had nothing else to do. So far I’ve not had to park between two trucks - but the bays are very very tight. I think he’d rather a bit of beeping to me crashing into him when I actually had to do it for real.

I also had no idea how to turn it off. I wasn’t shown how - and there was no book/manual to check. Next time I’m in a truck I’ll post a photo with questions on here. Or ask someone. I’m hoping to pick up a shift tomorrow night or Wednesday. But my two agencies have not offered me anything yet. Fingers crossed.

It could be that to switch off reverse alarm, all you need to do is switch on side lights.

Delivery steel today. With first manual box.

I miss the curtains. This ain’t for me. Very hard to get in gear. Also truck was broken when I got there so had rocky wait 2 hours for it to be fixed.

Just wanting this day to be over. For some reason I’m very nervous and have lost all my confidence.

Have a crane on back of truck. But no idea how to use it. If they try and make me I’m getting train home and walking off. Really really don’t like manual box - hard to get into gear.

Plus side - other drivers are sound. One drove truck into workshop cos I was struggling. And one brought me a cup of tea and warned me this truck is not good. Trying out a Tom Tom today - so far it couldn’t find the postcode of where I’m getting loaded now. But phone could. Not impressed with it.

Unless you have been trained on the crane, don’t touch it. You need a card to show you are competent to use it.

What make truck is it?

Sometimes you can get them into gear by just dipping the clutch, pressing the gearlever until some resistance is felt and you hear a slight grinding noise, then depressing the clutch fully and sliding it in there.

I’m not a truck driver BTW, but I had to drive some truly horrible farm tractors in my youth, and that’s a trick that worked for me. I think you are aligning the dogs or something.

Another trick from the olden days. Sometimes it helps to put it in the wrong gear, then, without lifting the clutch, selecting the gear you actually want.

It’s a daf. Which I think stands for dodgy as… I have had nothing but problems with dafs. This one has poor brakes as well. They are so bad I roll back at lights when pushing hard unless I put handbrake on. It’s not right.

In Manchester town centre now. Sheet said rigid only I can tell why. Took about 20 builders to get me in. But I did it without crashing. I an looking forward to going back to curtains. This is too stressful.

I might do class 1 so I don’t have to do this tight drops and drive manuals.

It the brakes are bad, then defect the thing.

And if your boss asks why just say; “I’m not Harry Potter, and I don’t want to be the next Phil Potter.”

This is not even a good attempt at a wind up. ‘It was rolling back even when I pressed the brake pedal very hard’. Jesus. All we need now is a threat to bounce someone’s head off the pavement and it will tick every ItsJoe box.

On the minuscule chance that this is a real person, if you have a cushy job at a university then WTF are you messing around with trucks for when you could be sitting on your arse all day watching the student skirt go by?

I don’t think you’ve had much interaction with generation snowflake. Unfortunately, I have. This guy, who I’m sure is a perfectly nice lad, is a prime example. Zero confidence in their ability, desire to give up if things get difficult, permanent hand holding and support processes needed in place.

Credit where it’s due, he’s giving it a go. But he typifies modern academia.

As for checking out the skirt, that’s not allowed anymore. Once the skirt has emerged from their safe space, they’ll be lodging a complaint against you for oggling them.

I think that’s a bit harsh.

I think anyone would be questioning themselves if on their first day at their first drop - they dragged a skip into another wagon. And since then I’ve done 2 more shifts - whilst doing a ‘full time’ other job. . At the moment everything is new to me so obviously, I’m going to be a bit apprehensive.

So far I’m not sure anyone has held my hand. But I’ve been really grateful to both the people on here and in real life who have given me advice and answered my questions.

So you are pretending to do two jobs. You’re ‘working in the lab’ when you’re supposed to be taking a daily rest.
