Is it law or a company rule?

Not doing a manual entry the following day for the previous end of day would be a bit unreaslistic some places as you need to hand keys back, so card out, keys out, walk to office, stand in line of people and wait to hand all back then walk to car. Manual entry next day to show the dicking around at the end bit. Least how it was last time I drove

5 mins is enough if you have the same truck and trailer as the previous day and it’s all newish kit that you use regularly, doesn’t stop me putting 15 mins on the card though

After my accident at work the Thames Valley Police Commercial Vehicle Unit downloaded my card and the trucks actual head and gave me a bollocking for not doing manual entries as when I took the card out the shunters use various trucks for moving stock internally and then putting my card in the next morning so I now do a manual entry every morning…
I’ve got 2 weeks to do on Thursday

so what penalty was involved for never doing a manual entry that your not required to do? apart from overzealous ina perfect world pc plods opinion which is meaningless unless you got charged? if you didnt,it just proves theres never any need for a manual and he was only blowing smoke.

I personally think a companies policy on daily checks is an arse covering exercise.
If a vehicle is stopped and a defect is found then they can say “the driver didnt do his checks. Look, we say it must be 15 minutes so its down to him” and they dont face any awkward questions. Likewise the driver cant say hes pressured to get on the road every morning as soon as hes in the cab.
Thats my opinion anyway but then Im a miserable old cynic who believes 99% of companies dont actually care about anything other than the bottom line and only do stuff to look after themselves

Heisenberrg:
It would be a real struggle for vosa to prove that I had not actually done a vehicle check based purely on the fact that I had not done a manual entry.

You’ve not thought this through at all or you’re as thick as pig muck.

How would you prove you have done a walk round check? There’s nothing on the card other than a minutes other work then you moving the vehicle so VOSA have all they need to prove you didn’t do one. VOSA will just ask where the time for it is recorded on your tachograph at the start of the shift, you would have nothing there. If you then say “well I did it before I put the card in and didn’t record it” they would then say you’re falsifying tacho records and do you for it. They could then decide to go through the last 12 months and do you for exceeding your daily duty hours every time you did within a few minutes of a 13hr and 15hr shift because you’ve admitted to doing checks without your card in and adding 10 minutes would put you over the 13/15hrs.

I was in a Great Bear depot in Rotherham a few weeks ago, reading the boards in the transport office, and I read a briefing that said drivers MUST show 30 mins of work at the start and the end of their shift to allow for vehicle checks, and that the 30 mins at the end cannot be added as a manual entry the next day. Funnily enough, I read the minuters from a drivers’ meeting, and excessive shift lengths was an issue amongst drivers ha ha.

30 minutes at the end of the shift? I’m in the car within 10 minutes of my handbrake being pulled when I get back & I know full well the units in good order for the night man because I monitor things through the day. Not a chance i’d be doing a full days work and then hanging about for half an hour :open_mouth:

VOSA don’t mind if you insert your card, drive straight away for one minute, then stop for the 15 at that point. That would represent “going to the fuel island, giving it a wash, or pulling up somewhere off the bay to do one’s walkaround checks”.

I mention this, as there are a good number of drivers who make a point of NOT putting their card in whilst shunting in the yard as they see it.
WTF not? Card in/Stop Start/Commence longer journey is all clear to see if you enter the card straight away.
VOSA are not manned by idiots. They do know how to read card data, and in particular - read between the lines as well.
They can even spot patterns like “Fast drive, fully stopped 15 minutes dead, fast drive” which translates as “Took a crafty 15 on the derv pumps at an MSA”.

I take as long as I take, very rarely fifteen minutes, but if DVSA want to argue they are quite welcome to download the hard drive from the cameras covering the whole of the lorry, then they can watch me doing my daily checks.

I dunno about you, but I’ll leave the doors with the cameras on wide open so they don’t point at me down the side of the wagon. I don’t want someone laughing at the way I scratch my arse, don’t kick the tyres hard enough, or get that big streak of grease across me whilst ducking under to check the underside! :unamused:

theres also their favourite pattren which reads…fast drive solid at 56 for four and a half…45 break, then repeat till legal max.interpreted as …the git in this irish yoke has the wire on her every day here…time for the full monty interrogation (again).

We have to record 15 mins other work before we even move the truck. Probably company policy but I do that and then spend at least another 10-15 minutes hooking up and checking the trailer I’m taking.

I’m led to believe that vosa want to see other work at the start of your shift to show you have had time since you inserted your card at the start of a shift to do your daily checks and done them properly.

I am aware plenty will say I’m talking ■■■■■■■■, but I do what my company asks us to do as it’s easier. And if I ever get stopped by Dvsa I have time recorded to show I’ve done my vehicle checks. If there is a defect then either I’ve not done them at or or properly or it was something that was missed.

I was told at the time we started having to do 15 min lead in times by our current o licence holder at that time, that vosa wanted to see 15 mins shown at least at the start of a shift, and to be fair she certainly knew her way around tacho regs and compliance.

I always I sent my card straight away before I do my checks. At the end of my shifts I do my checks whilst fuelling up the truck and then do my paperwork.

I do that when I’m desperate for a leak and I’m washing the wheel.
